“I don’t expect it to be too terrible,” NASCAR champion Bill Elliott’s son told USA TODAY Sports in a phone interview Wednesday. “I have already done two races in the same weekend in different places. I guess it will be somewhat similar to this.

“This year has been busier than most but I have been running late models since sixth grade so I missed a lot of Thursdays and Fridays in school. It was sort of a normal routine. ‘

Chase Elliott maman Cindy Elliott

Chase’s mother, Cindy Elliot, helped guide his young career even as Bill’s glorious career came to an end. A former photojournalist, she met the 1988 Sprint Cup champion as well as 16-time most popular driver during a studio assignment in 1988.

They started dating in 1992 and got married later that year. Chase, born in November 1995, is Bill’s third child after two daughters from a previous marriage. After supporting her husband’s career from 1993 to 2012, Cindy is now supporting her son’s efforts. She spoke with Autoweek ahead of the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway:

Autoweek: When did you and Bill realize Chase could be this good?

Cindy Elliott: Probably at 13. He was good at karting and had a talent for racing, but not really phenomenal until he got into full-bodied production cars. That’s when he seemed to click, when he won his sixth start and the Georgia State Championship (Late Model). He had always had an ambition and a love for it, but everything clicked at that moment.

Autoweek: What was the specific race when you saw this talent really break through?

Cindy Elliott: Maybe when he won the Winchester 400 (2010) at 14. Bill put a lot of thought into the whole (learning) process, so we went everywhere. After Winchester, we knew we had something special, especially the working relationship between Chase and (team leader) Ricky Turner.

Autoweek: Which was more stressful, watching Bill then or watching Chase now?

Cindy Elliott : Because I trust Chase so much, there really is no difference. I knew Bill wouldn’t put his car anywhere it wouldn’t go and Chase is the same. He won’t put himself in a position where he doesn’t feel comfortable. I was confident with Bill and I’m just as confident with Chase.

Autoweek: He looks young to be comfortable in the spotlight.

Cindy Elliott : I don’t know if he’s comfortable with it; above all, he is just comfortable with Chase Elliott. He’s been here so long and learned a lot from Bill. He was on the stand and had a (team) radio as a kid, listening to Bill, his team leader and spotter. He learned by watching and being around Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr. and Jimmie (Johnson).

Autoweek: Was there a point where you wondered exactly what you were getting yourself into?

Cindy Elliott : When Chase was 3, my mom said he was going to be a race car driver. It was time for me. I thought, “Where’s the golf clubs?” But you have to support your child’s passion. As long as he’s happy, I’m happy.

CHASE ELLIOTT GIRLFRIEND KAYLIE GREEN: IS HE MARRIED?

Chase is dating Kaylie Green, daughter of fellow legendary NASCAR driver David Green. David Green retired from racing in 2008 and is currently a NASCAR official. Kaylie is a student at the University of South Carolina, where she is studying public relations.

Coming from a NASCAR family, his brother is also a NASCAR driver. Kaylie fully supports her boyfriend’s career. She was seen at the 2017 Daytona 500 cheering on her boyfriend who was the pole sitter. Chase was in the lead before slipping to the back of the pack after running out of fuel.

Chase Elliott wins Cup Series title, Jimmie Johnson fifth in final race

Chase Elliott captured his first NASCAR Cup Series championship by winning the final race of the season at Phoenix. The 24-year-old becomes the third-youngest driver to win the title behind Jeff Gordon and Bill Rexford.

Elliott took the lead from Joey Logano with a rather manageable 42 laps to go and went on to take the checkered flag in his first Championship appearance 4. The No.9 started the race from behind after failing two times at pre-race inspection, but had no problem finding the speed to lead a record 153 laps.

It was the second straight victory for Elliott, who clinched their ticket to the Championship 4 by winning the Round of 16 final in Martinsville last week. Elliott ends the season with five career wins. He now has 11 total Cup Series wins.

NASCAR’s most popular driver is the second person in his family to win a Cup title. Chase’s father, Bill Elliott, won the championship in 1988. The Elliotts become the third NASCAR father-son duo to win a title, joining the Petty (Lee and Richard) and Jarrett (Ned and Dale).

“I’m at a loss for words,” Elliott said on NBC shortly after taking the checkered flag. ‘It’s incredible. Oh my God. We did it. I mean, we did. That’s all I have to tell you. Unreal.’

Shortly after winning the title, Elliott was congratulated by seven-time champion and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson in a pass-the-torch moment. The two then embraced on pit road after Elliott got out of the car. Johnson finished fifth, the highest of any non-elimination driver, in his final NASCAR Cup Series career as a full-time driver.

Chase won Sunday’s Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway as the race ended cautiously due to two wrecks on the final lap. He led 44 of the 188 laps, including the last four laps. He beat Alex Bowman, Ryan Preece, Joey Logano and Daniel Hemric.

SÉRIE CHASE ELLIOTT XFINITY

In January 2014, it was announced that Elliott would compete full-time in the Nationwide Series in 2014, driving the #9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, with sponsorship from NAPA Auto Parts. On April 4, 2014, Elliott won the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, holding Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch leading the pack with 16 laps to go.

On April 11, 2014, Elliott won the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway passing Elliott Sadler on the final lap after restarting 6th with two laps to go. Elliott won the EnjoyIllinois.com 300 at Chicagoland Speedway in the wake of retaining Trevor Bayne.

In Phoenix, Elliott won the Nationwide Series title with a remarkable lead over partner Regan Smith, becoming the leading new kid on the block and the youngest driver to win a NASCAR National Arrangement title. Later that year, he was named the Nationwide Series’ Most Popular Driver.

In 2015, Elliott got his first DNF in some time after being partnered with the huge second at Daytona, finishing 28th. On September 11, Elliott won his first race of the period at Richmond, ending his 36-race winless streak. He battled with Chris Buescher for the title, but was unable to make up for lost time and finished second in the foyers.

After Elliott’s rise to the Cup Series in 2016, he continued to drive for JR Motorsports with low maintenance in the Xfinity Series. In 2016, he drove the #88 vehicle in 5 races, including the season-opening PowerShares QQQ 300 at Daytona, which he won. He also drove the #5 vehicle in Texas.

In 2018, he started the season driving the #88 vehicle at Daytona, which his partner Tyler Reddick won in a near tie with colleague Elliott Sadler. Following Spencer Gallagher’s suspension from NASCAR, it was stated that Elliott would run the #23 vehicle for GMS Racing on select occasions, including races at Charlotte, Pocono, Chicagoland, Daytona and Bristol.
