CHARO CAREER

She studied the guitar of the famous Andrés Segovia after starting to play the guitar at the age of 9. Born in Spain, María del Rosario moved to the United States in 1966 after marrying Xavier Cugat. There she appeared on several series as a guest. They include The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Laugh-In and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”.

For five decades, Charo has recorded music and performed it in various styles. For example, in the 70s in collaboration with Salsoul Records, she released a series of disco recordings like Dance a Little Bit Closer in 1977. Her 1994 album titled Guitar Passion led her to win the Female Pop Album of the Year at the Billboard International Latin Music Conference in 1995 and was named Top Female Latin Pop Album by Billboard.

Charo performed on The Ed Sullivan Shown with her husband, Xavier Cugat, and his orchestra. She appeared in the sketch comedy “Laugh-In” in segments near the end of each episode.

His almost complete lack of fluency in the English language was played as comedic objective, with both hosts (Dan Rowan and Dick Martin) mocking his mangled English. It was around this time that she began using the phrase “cuchi-cuchi” in the public arena.

She began performing headlining solo in Vegas in 1971 and became a United States citizen by naturalization in 1977. She sang “Feliz Navidad” in 1988 on Pee-Wee Herman’s Christmas Special while performing guitar. In June 2008, she released the single “España Cañi” and also performed Rihanna’s song “Don’t Stop the Music” at the 2009 Muscular Dystrophy Association Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon.

On May 23, 2011, she performed portions of her show in Las Vegas on the eastbound transatlantic crossing of the cruise ship Disney Magic to standing ovations. She performed the show in two parts: the first was more pop-oriented while the second had her playing classical Spanish guitar.

Charo also appeared on a variety of shows in the 70s, eight times on the comedy/drama series, The Love Boat, the Donny & Marie, Tony Orlando and Dawn talk shows, The Captain and Tennille, The John Davidson Show, The Mike Douglas Show and Brady Bunch.

She began appearing in advertisements in the 2000s, such as an ad for Sprint wireless phone service and GEICO insurance, and has also appeared in Hollywood Squares. She made an appearance on the Latin-themed reality show Viva Hollywood on May 11, 2008.

She made an appearance on Dancing with the Stars in April 2010 and in July 2011 she was a celebrity guest judge on Season 2, the fifth episode of RuPaul’s Drag U.

She was revealed as a contestant on Season 24 of Dancing with the Stars on March 1, 2017. She was paired with professional dancer Keo Motsepe and on April 3 they were the second to be eliminated from the competition, finishing at the 11th position.

CHARO CUCHI CUCHI

As a musician, she has performed and recorded in various styles for five decades. She released a series of disco recordings in the 1970s with Salsoul Records, including Dance a Little Bit Closer (1977). In 1995, her flamenco album Guitar Passion (1994) won Female Pop Album of the Year at the Billboard International Latin Music Conference and was named Top Latin Pop Album by Billboard.

In an interview, Charo said, “All over the world I’m known as a great musician. But in America, I’m known as the cuchi-cuchi girl. It’s good because cuchi-cuchi drove me to the bank.

CHARO AND XAVIER CUGAT

Xavier Cugat was a Spanish conductor who discovered Charo when she was young. They also started a relationship and on August 7, 1966, they were married at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. It was Cugat’s fifth marriage at the age of 66. She later spoke of the marriage as a business contract, a way for Cugat to legally bring her to the United States where he was based.

She moved to the United States and lived at West 257th Street in the Bronx, New York with her mother and aunt. She was a regular with Cugat’s orchestra in New York and Las Vegas, Latin America and Europe. Once she reached the legal age of majority, she says she gave him a Rolls-Royce as a parting gift in 1978 and he was confident of her eventual success.
