INTERVIEW WITH CHARLIE WEBER
Charlie Weber: Killer Looks, Killer Style
Always walking away. After more than two years and two more seasons of “How to Get Away With Murder,” Charlie Weber returns for the magazine’s second round.
DAMAN: Hi Charlie! Great to have you back with us. How is 2018 going for you?
CHARLIE WEBER: Pretty good! I started well – I finished the fourth season – and now I’m trying to relax and get out of town a bit and spend time with my daughter.
DONNE: A few years ago when we first interviewed you, the second season of “How to Get Away With Murder” was about to end. Today, as you said, season four is over. What do you think of the show reaching this new milestone?
CW: It’s amazing. I feel like almost no time has passed. The final season went by so quickly because we all became so in tune with our characters and the story. It feels so good!
DONNE: And your character? How would you describe Frank Delfino’s growth as the series progressed through season four?
CW: I mean, it’s been an endless journey from peeling back the layers to a very complicated man. Every time he tries to become something, something else happens and he has to become something else.
GIVES: Now, as good as the first seasons were, season four got better reviews (it now has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). What happened?
CW: Honestly, I don’t know…I think we have a lot of talented people who are all working towards a common goal and doing their best and luckily people respond to it.
DONNE: Is there anything you can share with us about the future of ‘How to Get Away With Murder’?
CW: There is nothing to share. It is also a mystery to me. We’ll see what the future holds.
DONNE: In your opinion, what would be the ideal total length of this show? How many seasons do you think ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ should launch?
CW: It’s such a crazy show. I think we have no choice but to take it season after season. As long as the stories are interesting and intriguing to watch, I honestly don’t know how long it can last.
DONNE: There was also the crossover between “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Scandal” last January. Was it really exciting?
CW: It was an exciting event, but my script kept me on the sidelines of it. It was a cool event, but I can’t really speak to what it was like to be a part of it because my story took me away from that band.
GIVE: Spin-offs are also very popular these days. What do you think a standalone Frank Delfino story would look like?
CW: I think that would be quite intriguing. I think you would be forced to let him completely leave his channel and see what happens. You know, I think it would have a sense of humor and it might surprise me.
DONNE: Back when it started, even the name of the show was considered provocative. Today we have dozens of series that explore the most unpleasant aspects of human nature. What do you think of this trend?
CW: I think it’s good! I think that makes for interesting television. I think people are looking for these raw, human situations that go beyond the normalcy of existence. I think it’s a pretty cool trend and I like what I see.
DONNE: Beyond “How to Get Away With Murder,” do you have anything else planned for the rest of 2018?
CW: Uh, no, not really! I’m just sitting around, looking at some scripts and seeing what comes my way!
DONNE: Usually, what do you look for when considering joining a potential show?
CW: For me, it’s just a question of character. I certainly hope it’s a good story and other intriguing things about him, but I think about what this character is capable of and where could he go and can he grow and change. I’m kind of fascinated by that – a character’s beginnings and where I can take them.
DONNE: How does a seasoned actor like you prepare for a casting season?
CW: I don’t even know how to answer that question; it’s rare that I audition much more. You just have to try to get as close to the character as possible, however much time you have.
DONNE: Two years ago, you mentioned that you just wanted to “keep growing as an actor and always keep your focus on the job.” That being said, do you have any dreams – of the fanciest kind perhaps – that you want to pursue?
CW: No. As for what I said about acting, I want to keep it that way and aspire to do a good job all the time. I would love to get out of town more and lay down. Now, as far as acting goes, I’m just going to continue down this path and see where it takes me.
DONNE: Along those same lines, how does an actor with your background define success in your line of work?
CW: I think there are many ways to define it. I’m always impressed that I’m making a living out of something I love so much, so for me, that’s a huge hit. Getting up in the morning and going to play and being able to pay the bills doing that is a really, really amazing thing that I’m very lucky to be able to do.
DONNE: In terms of the overall angle of “doing what you love for living,” how do you continue to move from passion to just hard work?
CW: I don’t know if you can do it completely. I try to be as passionate as possible all the time, but some days it’s hard work and that’s good. But I don’t think you give up. You don’t give up on your character, you don’t give up on the story, and that will help keep you passionate instead of turning it into work.
GIVE: Social media now plays a huge role in showbiz, for everything from releasing trailers to managing fan outreach. How seriously do you take your online presence?
CW: No, really. I do my best and put a picture on Instagram every once in a while if I’m somewhere fun or interesting. But that’s about it for me.
DONNE: By the way, what else are you passionate about outside of acting? What usually keeps you busy when you’re not filming?
CW: I like to travel; I love to read and enjoy spending time with my daughter, friends and loved ones. I try to let this take as long as possible.
DONNE: And when you just want to get away from it all for a little while, what do you usually do?
CW: I’m just out of town. Whether it’s a few miles from the coast on the other side of the world, I just like to get out of town for a few days here and there.
DONNE: Last question, and going back a bit to “doing what you love in life” – now obviously a lot of people dream of doing that. To those budding actors looking to be as successful as you are, what would be your number one advice?
CW: I don’t think I should be giving acting advice, just something about becoming an actor or wanting to be an actor. Still, a good piece of advice I once received was to be proactive. Always be there, always strive to do something: get in front of a camera, step onto a stage and go find it. Don’t wait for it to come to you.

How to Get Away with Murder co-stars Charlie Weber and Liza Weil have split.
Weber, who plays Frank Delfino on the ABC show, confirmed the news in a statement to People on Thursday.
Charlie and Liza, who plays Bonnie Winterbottom on the legal drama, had been dating for more than two years.
“Liza and I share an incredible relationship rooted in love and respect,” the 40-year-old Jefferson City, Missouri native told the magazine. “
‘This relationship has found its way back to the great friendship we’ve always had.’
The actor, who had a small role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the early 2000s, said he and Liza, 41, will ‘continue to support each other and always love working together.’
A rep for Charlie told the magazine in 2017 that the pair began their relationship in the summer of 2016.
At the time, they were coming out of their respective divorces with former spouses Paul Adelstein and Giselle Weber.
Charlie opened up about the relationship with Weil in July 2017 while appearing on the podcast Allegedly with Theo Von and Matthew Cole Weiss, saying their dedication to their craft was a common bond.
“We share the same ideas when it comes to our approach to the game,” he explained.
“We’re two actors who are very dedicated to what they do and have a great ability to separate who we are and who we are as characters.”
The show, produced by Shonda Rhimes, stars Viola Davis and also stars Aja Naomi King, Billy Brown and Jack Falahee.
How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
