He was inspired by his own college experience to write his most famous novel, “The Graduate,” which led to the celebrated feature film. Charles Webb passed away at the age of 81 on June 16, 2020 in Eastbourne, England.


Born on June 9, 1939, in San Francisco (California), Charles Webb studied History and Literature at Williams College in Massachusetts. He wrote his most famous book at age 24, in 1963. The novel initially sold just 20,000 copies, considered a flop, but it attracted Hollywood producer Lawrence Turman, who bought the rights. The Graduate , directed by Mike Nichols and starring a very young Dustin Hoffman , became a phenomenon.

For the character of Elaine, he was inspired by his wife, Eve Rudd, since his parents initially prohibited him from seeing her. In the end they married and had two children.
