He was born September 25, 1932 in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Stanley received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond. Later, he received his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He received his Th.M. and Th.D. degrees in theology from Luther Rice Seminary in Florida (which later moved to Lithonia, Georgia).

His wife Anna originally filed for divorce on June 22, 1993, after they separated in the spring of 1992. Both agreed that Anna would revise the lawsuit to seek legal separation instead (“separate child support”), while asking the reconciliation .

She filed for divorce multiple times on March 20, 1995. The Stanleys were legally separated when divorce papers were last filed on February 16, 2000. A judge signed the final divorce decree on May 11 2000
