CHARLES OSGOOD CBS

Since joining the network in 1971, Mr. Osgood had been a reporter and anchor for every show on CBS, according to the network. It succeeded Charles Kuralt’s “Sunday Morning” in 1994. His voice, velvety and gravelly at the same time, made him known to radio, television and film listeners. In 2008, he is the narrator of the animated film ‘Horton Hears a Who!’

His heartwarming, almost folkloric approach to current affairs (and trademark bow ties) quickly eliminated any early doubts that he could successfully replace Mr. Kuralt, who had spent 15 years developing the show. With Mr. Osgood as chairman, the program won three Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Morning Program.

“Charles Osgood has one of the most distinctive voices in broadcasting, guiding every show, making sure the words were right, and being a calming, reassuring presence for our viewers,” said David Rhodes, president of CBS News, in a press release. “His uncompromising commitment to quality inspires all of us at CBS News.”

CHARLES OSGOOD HEALTH

Charles Osgood will end his daily radio show, ‘The Osgood File’, by the end of the year, and will also end the longest career in network broadcasting. In a statement released to stations on Thursday, Osgood said, “While I was very much looking forward to continuing to see you on the radio, unfortunately my health and my doctors will no longer allow it. So I will be retiring from “The Osgood File” and radio at the end of the year with great gratitude for all the success we have had together. Osgood retired as host of CBS News’ “Sunday Morning” in 2016.

The announcement was unexpected given that Osgood, who turns 85 early next month, had recently signed a new contract with his program’s distributor, Westwood One. In a phone interview on Friday, Osgood said: ‘I have two different types of cancer and had them treated at Sloan Kettering. I think they’re fine, or I should say they’re not getting worse. But I find that at my age, there is a time for all things to end.

He also said that by the first of the year, he would lose access to CBS News resources that have long been part of the four-minute show. Of the 80 shows a month he was under contract to produce, ‘you have to write them and spend time and look for source material, and at this point I can’t use CBS anymore.’

He said: “I just had this really strong feeling that I wasn’t going to enjoy next year, and my wife, who is quite sensitive to these things, said, ‘you’ve been doing this long enough.’ He noted that he also recently received an Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award, “and I’m like, well, I think they’re trying to tell you something. ‘Very well, you have your reward.’ ‘

Essentially an institution unto itself, Osgood has been in the business of television and radio for 60 years. No one else currently on the air comes close. “The Osgood File,” a four-times-a-day commentary on life, culture, or news, has aired for nearly 50 years, although a pre-ABC program aired long before the CBS version. For many years, “File” has been a model of conciseness but above all a reflection of a distinctive personality.

CHARLES OSGOOD SUNDAY MORNING

He ceased appearing as a CBS Sunday Morning anchor beginning September 25, 2016. The host entered the show on April 10, 1994, and went on permanent leave after serving for 22 years. However, he did not openly reveal the reason for his retirement, he might have decided due to his declining health or illness. He appears as host of The Osgood File and sometimes on Sunday mornings

RADIO CHARLES OSGOOD

He began his career as a journalist during his university years at the university’s FM radio station, WFUV, when enrolled at Fordham. After completing his studies, he was also hired as an announcer by WGMS and WGMS-FM, one of the most popular classical music stations. Subsequently, he was drafted into the army to be an announcer for the United States Army Band.

Later, after completing his tour with the US Army band, he returned to WGMS full-time as an announcer and before WGMS ended he promoted it to program director. In 1962, WGMS’s parent company, RKO General, moved Osgood to Hartford.

RETIREMENT OF CHARLES OSGOOD

Charles announced his retirement as anchor of CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” ending a 22-year streak on the show. Osgood’s 45-year award-winning career at CBS News will be celebrated when he last appeared as an anchor on September 25, 2016 on the CBS Television Network.

The special 90-minute edition of “Sunday Morning” in tribute to Osgood will feature insight into the legendary broadcaster’s career and will include surprise guests, interviews, commentary from supporters and special performances.

Osgood has anchored “Sunday Morning” since 1994, and with CBS News for 45 years. With Osgood as host, CBS’ “Sunday Morning” reached its highest ratings in nearly three decades, and three times the show won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Morning Program.

A seasoned journalist known as a gifted writer, Osgood has won numerous broadcasting awards, including Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.

He joined CBS News in 1971 and was an anchor and reporter for all shows on the network, including “CBS Morning News”, “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather”, and “CBS Sunday Night News”.

POEM BY CHARLES OSGOOD GOOD ENOUGH

There was once a pretty good student
Who sat in a pretty good class
And was taught by a really good teacher
Who always let pretty good pass.
He wasn’t great at reading,
He wasn’t a math whiz,
But for him, education was leading
straight down a very good path.
He didn’t find school too exciting,
But he meant well,
And he had a hard time writing
Since no one taught him how to spell.
When doing arithmetic problems,
Fairly Well was considered good.
5 + 5 doesn’t always have to equal 10;
A fairly good answer was 9.
The very good class he sat
in Was part of a pretty good school,
And the student was no exception:
On the contrary, he was the rule.
The really good school he went to
Was there in a pretty good town,
And no one there seemed to notice
He couldn’t tell a verb from a noun.
The very good student was
Part of a very good crowd.
And the first time he knew what he was missing was
when he was looking for a really good job.
It was while he was looking for a job,
He discovered that life could be difficult,
And he soon had a sneaking suspicion
Pretty good might not be good enough.
The pretty town of our story
Was part of a pretty good state
That had very good aspirations
And prayed for a very good destiny.
There was once a pretty good nation
Pretty proud of how great it was,
Who learned way too late,
If you want to be great,
Pretty good is, in fact, pretty bad.
