- The origin of his nickname Charlamagne Tha God comes from his old nickname Charles, which he used when selling crack because he didn’t want his customers to know his real name.
- He decided to use Charlamagne Tha God after reading about “Charlemagne” in history class, which means Charlemagne in French. He added “Tha God” because it sounded cool.
- In his early days, he was once involved in a gunfight while sitting in the back seat of the car. Although no one was killed in the shooting, he was arrested with others.
- He was once arrested for distributing cocaine. On another occasion, he was arrested by police authorities for possessing marijuana with intent to sell it.
- At one point, his father was jailed with him as the authorities believed they were drug queens. Although Charlamagne was guilty, his father was completely innocent.
- Shortly after his third stay-at-home arrest in his South Carolina jail, he decided to act differently and stay away from the wrong crowd. He attended night school and became an intern at the local radio station.
- Very early in his career, he recorded his interviews and broadcast them to popular sites like SOHH.com and All Hip-Hop (themaven.net/allhiphop) to get more exposure.
- He was discovered after popular radio host Wendy Williams arrested him as her co-host. He didn’t get a paycheck for about a year and a half, but they gave him housing.
