CARPENTER CHARISMA ATTACK
Charisma Carpenter I Survived Evil isn’t just the title of the new Investigation Discovery series she’ll be hosting — it’s also a statement the actress herself can make. In 1991, years before she traded barbs with Buffy, Carpenter and two friends were swimming at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego when they were violently attacked.by Henry Hubbard Jr., then a 29-year-old police officer. During the encounter, Hubbard, brandishing a gun, ordered Carpenter to tie up his male friends. But Carpenter refused, giving his companions the opportunity to jump in and subdue Hubbard, which ultimately led to his capture and arrest – even as the young men suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds along the way. .
Meanwhile, she kept the flashlight used by Hubbard to help seal his conviction for that assault which, combined with a series of others, landed him a 56-year prison sentence. Although Carpenter never openly discussed the heartbreaking incident, “Now I’m in a place where I could. I have enough distance and a lot of therapy between yesterday and today,” she tells TVLine. “It’s not as fresh. It’s not as painful. » Investigation Discovery’s I Survived Evil, which begins production later this summer with an eye on a 2013 arc, will tell similar true stories of everyday people who managed to fend off attackers. That Carpenter, given her own fear, was approached to host the show was pure coincidence.
“I don’t think [the producers] knew,” she admits. “And when I told them, they were like, ‘That makes sense. We want you to be equal Suite is part of the process. »» Indeed, she plays on the The Liar’s Game – hopes her new gig will not only explore the survivor but also the bad at hand. Reflecting on Hubbard’s series of sexual assaults and violent assaults, she can’t help but wonder, “What happens in a lifetime that a person can get to a place where he does it make sense to become a serial rapist? I mean, I have a child, so how does a child go from normal to not? Although Hubbard revealed in his testimony that he grew up with an alcoholic father, “it seemed like his life was back on track” by the time he unleashed his reign of terror, Carpenter recalled. “He was top of his class at the police academy, he was married with a baby on the way…. From an anthropological point of view, I am very curious to know what happened. »
