  1. Chad started playing drums when he was 7 years old.
  2. At the age of 15 he fled home and returned after being away for a summer.
  3. He received no formal drumming lessons and gained his experience in various school bands, including those named Paradise .
  4. In 1977, his band, Paradise won a Battle of the Bands in Birmingham.
  5. After Paradise , he joined other bands including Pharroh and a Michigan-based band called Toby Redd .
  6. He was introduced to R&B and funk from Pharroh Larry Fratangelo who also taught him how to play funk.
  7. In one of his interviews he stated that he used to be just a drummer, but after meeting Larry he became a musician.
  8. Soon after moving to California to pursue his musical dreams, he heard about Red Hot Chili Peppers auditioning for the band, but initially they believed his appearance resembled a metal drummer more than a punk drummer.
  9. Shortly after the audition, he was hired by the band due to his performance, which impressed everyone.
  10. Chad officially joined Red Hot Chilies in December 1988.
  11. In 2007, Chad joined guitarist Jeff Kollman and keyboardist Ed Roth to form an all-instrumental band. The inspiration for the band was a shared love of funk and 1970s fusion.
  12. In 2008, Red Hot Chili Peppers decided to take a break from their busy schedule and Chad decided to join the hard rock supergroup, Chicken Feet , which also included Sammy Hagar, Joe Sat and Michael Anthony.
  13. Chad is considered one of the top session musicians in the music industry and has worked with the likes of Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, Dixie Chicks, Jennifer Nettles, Kid Rock, Jake Bugg, Glenn Hughes and many others.

Chad is also an avid supporter of his state athletic teams and during one of the Chili Peppers performances in Columbus, OH on May 14, 2017, he sang the University of Michigan fight song “The Victors,” which made national news since the University of Michigan and the state of Ohio are longtime sports rivals.
  20. He is also a philanthropist and has supported a number of charitable organizations such as Surfer’s Healing, SeriousFun Network, MusiCares, Silverlake Conservatory of Music, Guitar Mash NY, Camp Korey and Little Kids Rock.

  22. On May 16, 2015, he received the “Livin’ The Dream Award” from Little Kids Rock, a non-profit national charity, for his work improving school children’s access to music education.
