Millan’s first job was at a dog grooming store in the United States. He later established the Canine Academy of Pacific Point. While working as a limousine driver, Jada Pinkett Smith became one of Millan’s earliest customers and supporters, providing him with an English teacher for a year. Millan then established the Dog Psychology Center in South Los Angeles, a two-acre (0.81 ha) facility specializing in working with large-breed dogs.
Millan worked with MPH Entertainment, Inc. in 2002 to develop a television pilot for Dog Whisperer, a reality television series that follows Millan as he works in the field of canine rehabilitation, following a profile in the Los Angeles Times. The series premiered on the National Geographic channel on September 13, 2004, then moved to the Nat Geo WILD channel. During its first season, the show would become National Geographic’s No. 1 show and was broadcast as it aired in over eighty countries around the world. The last episode of the show aired on September 15, 2012 in the United States.
In 2009, in the United States and Canada, Millan launched Cesar’s Way magazine, of which he was the editorial director. The magazine combined Millan’s advice with articles on the dog-human relationship. They are cute and lovable little balls of fur, but they can be harder to handle than adult dogs. “Puppy Training” is our number one category for questions at Cesar’s Way. That’s why Cesar decided to offer his top ten puppy tips and more.
- Protect your puppy at home before arrival! Hide electrical cords and cables, keep trash securely closed, place childproof latches on cabinets and cupboards, secure cleaning supplies. Keep smelly clothes you have picked up and tied in a basket, and keep dangerous items in the bathroom safe – razors, perfume, cotton balls, soap, etc… and keep the toilet lid closed at all times .
- Bringing a puppy home: take it for a walk to tire it out first; invite her into the house after you are still on a leash and establish her as your territory when you introduce her.
- Everyone remains calm and practical “no contact, no talk, no eye contact” during the introduction. Leave her off leash when you get to where she is going to sleep. This tells him “this place is yours”.
- Establish a regular schedule for walks, eating, and playtime, and stick to it. Make sure your puppy has potty time every two to four hours at first, and five to thirty minutes after eating is when he will naturally need to go.
- Never punish your puppy for an accident in the house or misbehavior that you didn’t catch him doing. She won’t make the association and you’ll just confuse her. Keep calm and clean up.
- Puppies use their mouths when playing; we have to teach them what is appropriate and what is not when it comes to butchering and biting. The sweet game continues. The rough play stops and gives the pup a time out.
- If you don’t want the puppy to mouth people at all, redirect him before his mouth makes contact by using a chew toy or treat and have him bite on it instead.
- Immediately establish a relationship with the veterinarian. If you already have one that you love and trust, great. If not, find one as soon as possible so your pup can live a healthy life.
- Consider investing in canine health insurance, especially when your pup is young and the premiums are lower. This can cover things like routine visits, vaccinations, and a lot of the major costs of surgeries, and it’s much easier to maintain your pup’s health.
- Be patient! Remember that puppies are just learning rules, boundaries, and boundaries, and it will take them a few tries to get it right. Failure today is not failure forever, so don’t get frustrated. Stay calm and consistent and eventually your pup will get it.

CESAR MILLAN DOG TRAINING TECHNIQUE
Millan’s work focuses on using what he calls “calm, assertive energy” to handle a dog. He thinks dog owners should define their role as calm and assertive pack leaders. In that order, dogs have three primary needs, according to Millan: exercise, discipline, and affection. In other words, it is the responsibility of the owner to meet the energy level requirements of the dog through challenging exercise; then to provide clearly communicated rules, limits and boundaries; and finally, giving affection. According to Millan, giving lots of affection with very little exercise and even less discipline is a common pitfall for American dog owners. It encourages owners to understand the
Millan’s television programs focus on dog rehabilitation while Millan simultaneously educates dog owners in his philosophy of dog handling. Typically, conversations with owners revolve around his philosophy: that healthy, balanced dogs require strong “pack leadership” from their owners, while Millan shows how owners with their dogs can achieve and maintain a leadership role. In some cases, for an extended period of more intensive rehabilitation, Millan takes dogs with serious behavioral problems to his canine psychology center.
The programs are not intended as a guide to dog training, and each episode contains repeated warnings that viewers should not try behavior modification techniques at home without professional advice.
While working with a dog, Millan often uses vocal cues such as touch, gestures, and body language to communicate with dogs rather than the dog’s speech or name. Millan encourages owners to create their own unique sound that works for them. He believes that dogs sense, understand and respond to a person’s energy more readily than their speech.
Millan said, “My goal in rehabilitating dogs and training people is to create balanced relationships between humans and dogs.” In 2009, The New York Times attributed Millan’s success to his sense of personal poise, describing him as “kind of über-balanced mine.”
CESAR MILLAN IN POPULAR CULTURE
In Ghost Whisperer Season 2 Episode 18, “Children of Ghosts,” Millan played the role of himself. In the episode, Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) asks Millan for advice on how to help Homer, the ghost dog from Ghost Whisperer (from Season 1). In “Tsst”, the May 3, 2006, episode of the animated series Comedy Central South Park, a satirized version of Millan was portrayed. Liane Cartman enlists Millan’s help in applying her principles to her misbehaving son, Eric Cartman, in the episode. The principles work, and Eric is completely reformed, but Liane does not continue to apply Millan’s techniques and Eric reverts to his old behavior.
Millan played himself in “The Finger in the Nest” on the September 17, 2008, episode of Bones, helping the main characters determine if a dogfighting location was being used. Millan starred in Beethoven’s Big Break, which premiered in theaters December 30, 2008, and The Back-Up Plan, which released in theaters April 23, 2010. In episode 3 of the reality competition series’ 10th season American The Apprentice, Millan made an appearance as a judge, presenting clues in a category on the April 27, 2011 episode of Jeopardy! and as the chef’s table d’hôtes in the season 15 episode of Hell’s Kitchen.
