Cécile Aubry had a short but brilliant film career. She then became a writer and created a children’s television series. Aubry herself passed away on July 26, 2010, in Dourdan, on the outskirts of Paris, at the age of 81, due to lung cancer.

Born on August 3, 1928 in the French capital, Anne-José Madeleine Heriette Bénard –her real name– made her big film debut at the age of 20 playing the title character in Manon , adaptation of the novel by Abbé Prévost by Henri-George Clouzot. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice in 1949.

Soon after, Aubry was recruited by Hollywood to star in the adventure film The Black Rose , opposite Tyrone Power and Orson Welles . After Christian-Jaque’s Barba Azul , she shot five more films, among which La ironía del dinero stands out , a Franco-Spanish co-production co-directed by Edgar Neville .

In 1960, Cécile Aubry surprised the public by withdrawing without giving any explanation. Over time, it became known that she married Si Brahim El Glaoui, son of the pasha of Marrakech, and that she went to live in Morocco. She ended up separating from him, and she returned to France where she became a children’s writer starting the series Belle et Sébastien , which was adapted for television. Aubry’s son, Mehdi El Glaoui , played the lead, a boy who lived in the Alps with his dog. Scottish rock band Belle & Sebastian take their name from these books. Aubry was also the creator of the Poly series , which was highly successful.
