A calendar of events has been released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to mark the one anniversary of the launch of the eNaira, Africa’s first central bank digital currency (CBDC), on October 25, 2021.
According to a statement made yesterday in Abuja by Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, Director of the Corporate Communications Department, the introduction of the eNaira had established Nigeria as one of the forerunners in the deployment of a CBDC into live production.
He claimed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, other Central Banks, and the CBDC community have all continued to show interest in this.
The CBN will hold a one-day workshop titled “Leveraging Innovation for Inclusive Growth and Development: The eNaira Advantage” scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of the celebrations planned for the anniversary, according to the director.

The workshop’s aims include reviewing the eNaira effective implementation a year after it began, encouraging greater eNaira adoption through public outreach, and facilitating a worldwide policy conversation on CBDC to encourage peer learning and benchmarking.
Mr. Nwanisobi stated that the Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, would serve as the event’s host and that the Ministers of Communication and the Digital Economy as well as Humanitarian Affairs will serve as speakers.
the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc (NIBSS), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), members of the Bankers’ Committee, academics, financial services and telecommunications regulators, businesspeople, agents, cooperative groups, technical experts, and the entertainment industry.
The event would also include a panel discussion on “eNaira Adoption for Economic Growth” and a policy round-table discussion on “Effective Collaboration for National Development (Infrastructure, Interoperability, Regulation)”.

To accelerate the implementation of the eNaira platform in Lagos State, CBN, working in conjunction with Bizi Mobile Cashless Conduct, has signed up Keke Napep drivers and dealers in the Oshodi market.
The state of Orile was included in the onboarding process by the apex bank.

A new regulation requiring bank clients to pay indemnification on bank transfers beyond N1 million and N10 million for individual corporate organizations has been issued by Nigeria’s main bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, according to a report by legit.ng
For both individual consumers and corporate clients, the CBN set a maximum transferrable amount of N25 million and N250 million, respectively.
The new regulation will relieve the banks from liability and shift responsibility for any violations or hazards associated with such transactions to the bank’s clients.
