The CBCN has urged the Christian Association of Nigeria, which originally advocated for the bill in the National Assembly, to focus on legislation that addresses attacks on Christians in the North instead of promoting a bill that undermines Nigeria’s secular character.
Meanwhile, the bill which is sponsored by several lawmakers, aims to develop, regulate, and approve Christian education syllabuses at all levels. It also intends to certify Christian religion education instructors and oversee the content of Christian religious education in schools, as well as accredit programs in Christian theological institutions.
Additionally, the Catholic bishops express concern that the bill does not exempt seminaries and other religious institutes owned by Christian denominations. They believe the bill infringes on their right to provide instruction and formation in accordance with their respective doctrines, citing Section 42(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
