Who is Cathie Jung?

Born in 1937, American Victorian Dress enthusiast, Cathie Jung, has held the record for the smallest waist in the world for over two decades now. She was awarded the title by the Guinness Book of Records in 1999 and no other living person has been able to break it.

Jung’s record has earned her prominence over the years and the 85-year-old corset enthusiast continues to wow the world with her 15-inch waist. Let’s see how she got here.

How Cathie Jung Became the Woman With the Smallest Waist in the World

Cathie Jung started wearing a 15.24 cm (6 in) training belt at the age of 38 due to her love for Victorian clothes. The belt gradually reduced her 26-inch waist to 15 inches (corseted). Un-corseted, her waist measures 53.34 cm (21 in). Interestingly and noteworthy, Jung is 5 ft 8 in tall.

While many people think she had a surgery define her waist, Jung simply made use of corsets to attain her current waist size. She does not eat a special diet or go through a routine exercise. Matter-of-factly, she revealed that she had no intention of setting a record. “It was about dressing appropriately for the age,” she said.

Since 1983 when she started wearing corsets, Jung has worn corsets 23 hours a day, only taking it off for her daily bath.

While many people are concerned for Jung over likely side effects like the damaging of her organs, the record breaker continues to be proud of her 15-inch waist which is the smallest waist in the world on a living person since 1999.
