FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT WITH CATHERINE CURTIN FROM STRANGER THINGS & GOLD STAR

Sophia Cowley for Film Inquiry: Interesting is one word for it.

Catherine Curtin: (Laughs) Interesting is a word, yes. I just feel that art right now is vitally important for people to be able to express, release and feel, think, breathe and exhale. I think people need to remain insensitive. I’m happy to bring art to people, whether it’s laughing, crying, thinking, angry or feeling something uplifting, it’s so important. But anyway, I’m just walking around.

No, no, everything is important. I mean, you’ve worked with fledgling directors and helped make art more accessible. I’m curious what it’s like to work with first-time filmmakers like Jessica M. Thompson (Moonlight) and Victoria Negri (Gold Star) versus larger-scale production like Stranger Things.

Catherine Curtin: Yeah, that’s a really good question. I love working with new directors; for me it’s a very joyful occasion because it’s just so right, the beauty of writing, you know, the beauty of going there, the beauty of saying, ‘It’s my passion and let’s follow it .” Independent film, I feel like it tells smaller stories, and where many, many moments are explored, rather than television, where you jump from one event to another.

I firmly believe that one event in a person’s life can completely change their life forever. And I think that’s a lot of what independent filmmakers do; they explore this essential thing that happened, this question of Passover, this precise moment.

I think I’ve been very lucky in the TV shows I’ve been on, because all the TV shows I’ve been on feature political and philosophical events. [With Orange Is The New Black], I think people understand that our prison system needs a lot of reform and it’s not really working, and we’re imprisoning more people than any first world nation; we imprison more women than any nation in the first world. It’s just crazy, and Orange’s job is to make people sympathetic and empathetic towards the lives of other lifers.

And then, with Insecure, I think Issa Rae is a genius, what she does subtly, politically and philosophically, and how she, in her own way, brings us all together so much by saying we’re all so much more the same than not the same. She raises very problematic questions, she does it and makes people laugh.

And on Stranger Things, for me, it’s like, the best creative presence I could ever get, really, because it’s such a creative set to work on, and there’s so much cuteness on set and generosity and imagination…I feel so lucky to be part of this incredible journey into the underworld.

I firmly believe that one event in a person’s life can completely change their life forever.

You bring a lot of heart to Gold Star. Can you talk a bit about your behind-the-scenes experience? What allowed you to embody the complex role of guardian and head of the family with such authenticity?

Catherine Curtin: My father died when I was 17; I was a caregiver in high school for my father. I think Victoria’s story really hit me and I got it. I think one of the hardest things in life is being graceful under pressure, and I don’t think [his mother] is really graceful under pressure as a character. I think she’s trying to hold on and she’s fine and not fine and fine and not fine. And she’s angry, and she’s sloppy with her emotions, and I think most people are like that.

I don’t think there’s that pretty picture of good behavior when your soul mate is dying. When I see that in big-budget Hollywood movies, I’m like, ‘Okay, well, that’s a nice reaction!’ I would throw things; I would be crazy. I think you have to have empathy for people who handle things in a way that isn’t great. Because it’s true, that’s how we are. When you lose someone, it’s like walking in quicksand.

I’m sure you often wonder, but what was it like working with Robert Vaughn?

Catherine Curtin: Oh, he was handsome. He was a real gentleman. There were no locker rooms, there were no trailers, no one was making money and that was good for him. And then he was telling stories about old Hollywood, or when he was going to audition for Man From UNCLE and he was out the night before, and he looked at the docs that morning, but he didn’t really know it, but he did just thought, “I’m going to come in and have a great time”, and he did and he booked this huge job! He was never judgmental…he just came to it like, ‘Everything’s great, everyone’s great, and it’s fantastic.’
