  • ADC Raises Alarm After Aregbesola, Party Leaders Denied Access to El-Rufai at ICPC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of obstructing access to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, after senior party leaders were denied permission to see him at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The party also alleged that heavily armed security operatives were deployed around the premises during the visit by its delegation.

    Aregbesola, ADC Leaders Denied Access

In a statement issued on Friday by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said its delegation included former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, and Mallam Salihu Lukman.

According to the statement, the delegation had visited the ICPC headquarters in Abuja to seek access to El-Rufai but was denied entry despite prior communication with the agency.

“Earlier today, alongside the National Secretary of our party, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and the Secretary of the ADC Policy and Manifesto Committee, Mallam Salihu Lukman, we visited the headquarters of the ICPC in Abuja to see Mallam El-Rufai. Despite prior communication and formal requests, we were denied access without any reasonable explanation,” the party said.

    ADC Alleges Intimidation

The party further claimed the atmosphere around the ICPC office became tense after several truckloads of armed police officers arrived at the premises.

According to the ADC, the deployment created the impression that authorities were attempting to intimidate opposition figures.

“It is deeply troubling that a simple request by senior party officials to visit a detained colleague was met, not with professionalism, but with a show of force,” the statement added.

The party accused state institutions of increasingly being used as tools for political pressure against opposition voices.

    ICPC Responds

Reacting to the allegation, ICPC spokesperson, J. Okor Odey, said the court order regarding access to El-Rufai only covered family members, lawyers and doctors.

“Court order for access to the defendant in our custody is for family members, lawyers and doctors,” he said.

The Commission also questioned the ADC’s standing regarding visitation rights.

“Within this context, please what is the ADC?” he added.

    Court Had Granted Bail

El-Rufai is currently under investigation by the anti-corruption agency over allegations yet to be fully disclosed publicly.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier granted him bail in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like sum.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the surety must own property in Maitama or Asokoro and meet other conditions, including proof of federal civil service status and salary records.

The former governor’s detention has continued to generate political reactions, with opposition figures accusing the government of targeting dissenting voices.

  • “Rivers People Have Entered One Chance” — VeryDarkMan Reacts to Kingsley Chinda’s APC Primary Win, Reopens 2024 Allegation

Social media commentator VeryDarkMan has reacted after Kingsley Chinda emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in Rivers State.

In a video shared on his social media page, the activist revisited a 2024 allegation involving Chinda and former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike, over claims linked to a disputed land allocation in Abuja.

“Rivers People Have Entered One Chance”

VeryDarkMan did not hold back in his reaction, expressing shock over the development and linking it to earlier political claims he had made.

“Rivers State people have entered one chance. This is the same Kingsley Chinda I posted about in 2024 during the issue of land in Abuja, where Wike allegedly allocated land to him,” he said.

He alleged that the land in question was originally owned by private individuals before it was revoked and reassigned under controversial circumstances.

According to him, the development raises concerns about how political power and influence are used in governance.

    Fresh Allegations Revisited

The activist further claimed that the land, located in a strategic area, could have significant financial value if later sold or developed.

He also alleged that political decisions in Rivers State are often shaped by influence and control rather than public interest.

“Wike revoked the land from the rightful owners who had original documents, then allocated it to Kingsley Chinda, possibly so it could be sold later for millions because of its strategic location,” he added.

    Rivers Political Tensions Resurface

VeryDarkMan also weighed in on the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, suggesting that power struggles continue to shape leadership outcomes in the state.

He further alleged that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had faced political pressure due to internal party conflicts, linking the situation to broader governance issues.

He also criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, blaming the administration for worsening political and governance challenges.

    Mixed Reactions Trail Comments

The video has since sparked widespread debate online, with Nigerians divided over the allegations, the APC primary outcome, and the broader political climate in Rivers State.

While some users supported his claims, others dismissed them as political commentary ahead of future elections.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm, support the ongoing efforts of the joint security team, and verify every piece of information before sharing it.

One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was later killed, further deepening concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Oyo State.

  • DHQ Says Oyo School Abductors Were Displaced Terrorists Fleeing Military Operations

The Defence Headquarters has said the terrorists responsible for the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State were criminal elements displaced from other parts of the country following intensified military operations.

The military made the clarification on Thursday while reacting to reports surrounding comments credited to the Defence Headquarters over terrorist activities in the South-West region.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, the Defence Headquarters said the attackers belonged to the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) terrorist group.

Military links Oyo attack to displaced terrorists

According to the statement, the terrorists were forced out of their former strongholds due to sustained military offensives across different parts of the country.

“The recent incidence of kidnap in Oyo State was clearly perpetrated by terrorists of the JAS Group that have been dislodged from other parts of the country due to high-intensity operations being conducted all over,” the statement read.

The military maintained that troops remained actively deployed in affected areas alongside other security agencies and local stakeholders to track down criminal groups.

    DHQ reacts to controversy

The Defence Headquarters also dismissed what it described as misleading interpretations of its earlier comments regarding insecurity in the South-West.

It stressed that the Armed Forces remained committed to protecting democratic institutions and supporting constitutional governance.

“At no time did the Defence Headquarters undermine the authority of any democratically elected leader or seek to diminish the gravity of the heinous crime committed against innocent citizens by terrorist elements,” the statement added.

  • ASUU Rejects FG’s Plan To Scrap ‘Irrelevant’ University Courses

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Federal Government’s reported plan to phase out certain university courses considered “irrelevant” to current labour market demands.

The union described the proposed move as dangerous and a direct threat to academic freedom and university autonomy in Nigeria.

ASUU, in a statement issued by its Benin Zone, insisted that all academic programmes remain important to national development and warned against government interference in university curriculum decisions.

    ASUU faults proposed course review

The controversy follows recent comments credited to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, who reportedly said the government intended to align university programmes with modern economic realities and global trends.

Reports indicated that some humanities and social science-related courses were being considered for review or possible discontinuation over concerns about employability and labour market relevance.

Reacting to the development, ASUU maintained that universities should retain the exclusive right to determine their academic programmes through their governing structures and senates.

“Universities are not technical colleges. They are centres of knowledge creation and dissemination. Every discipline has its place in national development,” a source within the union stated.

    Union warns against interference

ASUU also warned that any attempt by the Federal Government to dictate courses offered in universities could weaken the country’s higher education system.

The union vowed to resist what it described as efforts to commercialise and vocationalise university education at the expense of critical thinking and broader intellectual development.

The disagreement further adds to the strained relationship between ASUU and the Federal Government following unresolved issues surrounding previous agreements reached with the union.

    Concerns over another crisis

Stakeholders within the education sector have continued to call for dialogue between both parties to avoid another industrial crisis in public universities.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Ministry of Education had not officially responded to ASUU’s latest position on the matter.

  • Presidency Denies Tinubu’s Alleged Plan To Rename Nigeria, Scrap Sharia Law

The Presidency has denied reports alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region through constitutional amendments.

The denial was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, the viral report was false, misleading and deliberately created to stir tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.

    Presidency dismisses viral report

The statement insisted that there was no plan by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to introduce any constitutional amendment seeking to change Nigeria’s name or abolish Sharia law.

“The Presidency wishes to inform Nigerians and state clearly that there is no truth to the viral fake story claiming that President Bola Tinubu seeks to carry out constitutional amendments that will change Nigeria’s name to the United States of Nigeria and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region,” the statement read.

The Presidency described the report as part of a wider attempt by unnamed politicians to create political instability in the country.

“The story, which cited anonymous sources, is part of the dubious plot by some desperate politicians to create disaffection in our country, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity ahead of the general elections,” it added.

Onanuga denies “Project True Federation” claim

The Presidency also rejected claims that Tinubu intended to send a constitutional amendment bill allegedly code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly.

According to Onanuga, no such proposal exists within the Presidency.

“President Tinubu has no plan whatsoever to send any bill code-named Project True Federation to the National Assembly,” he said.

He stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal process involving both the National Assembly and state legislatures.

    Tinubu focused on reforms

The statement further noted that the President remained focused on economic reforms and governance rather than political distractions.

“President Tinubu is focused on the arduous task of entrenching and deepening the economic reforms his administration has embarked upon,” the Presidency stated.

The government also urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified and divisive information as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
