INTERVIEW: CARRIE PRESTON DE CLAWS

Having the chance to speak with Carrie Preston is like a warm hug. The writer-director-producer-actress is marvelous on the TNT series Claws, and her character Polly reveals new sides of herself in almost every episode. Of course, we also loved her performance as Arlene on True Blood, as well as her work in The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Basically, we’re big (!!) fans of hers and it was a wonderful opportunity to speak with her ahead of Claws Season 2.

Here’s a condensed and edited version of our chat with the lovely Carrie Preston.

Short Take: What first attracted you to Claws?

Carrie Preston: When I first read the script, I thought, “this is really something special and something that really stands out from all the pilot scripts”. There are some amazing pilot scripts out there right now, but this one just had something unique about it. It was special and funny and weird and raunchy and surprising and dark, and all of those things came together nicely. When you feel like that reading a script, you know you’re already starting strong. I thought to myself, “if we do it right, people will really flock there”. And they are! They really flock to it and we are very grateful to them. All the cast and crew give it their all and I’m very proud to be a part of it.

BT: The whole thing, especially the five main women on the show, work so well together, on and off screen. Can you talk a bit about working with them?

CP: You know, when you see friendships with women on TV shows or movies, they’re usually pitted against each other. You can’t have a drama-free TV show or movie, that’s just a fact. In this case, however, the conflict is not between them, the conflicts come to them from outside. Even though they have tension between them, they are still a crew. They don’t try to destroy themselves, they try to build themselves up. Then it spills over into our own personal relationships. It’s good to be part of a team where this dynamic and this sense of camaraderie are in place.

BT: Tell me about the creation of your Polly character, which is really a mystery to those around her.

CP: With Polly, she’s an identity thief, so you never really know what you’re getting with her and the other characters either. She leaves everyone, including herself, guessing. Polly organizes her own life as she lives it. There are psychological reasons for this, which the public may not have seen yet, but there is a pain there that she is trying to decontextualize, get rid of or recover from. Nonetheless, it keeps the audience guessing and it’s extremely fun to play as an actor. I’m able to play so many different characters, all in one character.

BT: As a well-known and respected actress, using your platform to work with GLAAD really makes a difference for a lot of people.

CP: Thank you. Exactly. I think that’s important, especially these days, because so many people don’t feel like they’re being heard.

BT: Without revealing any spoilers, what can you tell our readers about the new season of Claws?

CP: Watch the first episode very carefully and see how each of the characters react to a certain incident, and then you’ll see the roads each of them will be on this season.

BT: I was a big fan of True Blood and your character on the show. Do you still keep in touch with any of the cast of this show?

CP: You know, it was a wonderful experience and I miss this show and I miss these people. I have such fond memories of it all. I follow all the actors on social media but everyone is so scattered around the world that we have an international cast.

But last week I was on the phone with Lauren Bowles, we were just catching up. Then I shot in Atlanta recently and I was able to see Stephen Moyer there. So we all get together when we can and I certainly try to follow what everyone is doing and try to support their work.

I love these guys! People always come to me and want to talk about True Blood and how much they love it. They talk about how they had viewing parties and how that shaped them.

People were really taken in by this world and it’s such a testament to Alan Ball and what he was able to do with this story. You could replace any group of disenfranchised people with this show’s vampires, so everyone had a way to participate in the series.

Even if you just wanted to watch it because it was fun or because there were a lot of hot guys on it, I mean there was always something that drew people to this show! So many different types of people were drawn to this show, but I could say the same for Claws!

I have so many different types of fans who come up to me and tell me about Claws – people I would never expect to watch it. So it’s exciting to move on to another show that resonates with people. It means the world to me and I feel so lucky.
