The name of the group is Wilson Phillips. They are an American vocal group made up of Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips, the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas respectively.
Their 1990 self-titled debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and placed three number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, making the trio the best-selling girl group at the time. The group won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year for “Hold On,” in 1990 and has additionally been nominated for five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.
SINGER CARNIE WILSON
Carnie co-founded Wilson Phillips with her younger sister Wendy and childhood friend Chynna Phillips when they were teenagers. Carnie and her team released two albums, Wilson Phillips and Shadows and Light, which sold 12 million copies. The group also charted three No. 1 singles and six top 20 hits in the United States before disbanding in 1993.
Carnie and Wendy Wilson continued to record together, releasing the Christmas album Hey Santa! in 1993. Their father joined them for a critically successful (but unsuccessfully commercial) 1997 album, The Wilsons. Carnie also sang ‘Our Time Has Come’ with James Ingram for the 1997 animated film Cats Don’t Dance.
Carnie attempted to launch a solo musical career with the album For the First Time in 2003. The album featured a remake of the ballad Samantha Mumba written by Olivia DiNucci “Don’t Need You To (Tell Me I’m Pretty )”, retitled “I Don”t Need You To”, as its first single. However, the single failed to generate interest and the album was eventually shelved when Carnie reunited with Wendy and Chynna as Wilson Phillips in 2004.
After their reunion, the group released a third album, named California, which appeared on Sony Music’s label. The album included covers mostly from the 1960s and 1970s, and particularly highlighted the musical glory days of their parents’ California musical groups: The Mamas & the Papas and the Beach Boys.
In 2006, Carnie released a lullaby album, A Mother’s Gift: Lullabies from the Heart, created shortly after the birth of her daughter, Lola. She released her second solo effort in October 2007, a Christmas album titled Christmas with Carnie featuring a song written by her husband; “Warm Lovin’ Christmas Mastime”.
