Early life and high school career

Anthony was born on May 29, 1984, in Brooklyn, New York City. His dad, Carmelo Iriarte, was from Manhattan and had Puerto Rican, African, Spanish, and indigenous roots, and his mom, Mary Anthony, was Black American. His dad passed away when Anthony was two, and when he turned eight, his family moved to Baltimore.

In high school, Anthony went to Towson Catholic High School for three years. In 1999, he had a growth spurt and became a top player in the area. He won awards like Baltimore Sun’s Metro Player of the Year and Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year. His grades dropped, and he got in trouble, but he was still a star player.

College coaches wanted Anthony on their teams, but he chose Syracuse University. To get in, he had to improve his grades. He thought about transferring schools, but he ended up at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia for his senior year. He played well in summer tournaments and became friends with LeBron James.
