In October 1966, in San Francisco, Santana created the Santana Blues Band. By 1968 the band had begun to incorporate different types of influences into their electric blues. “If I went into a cat’s room,” the band’s guitarist recalls, “he’d listen to Sly (Stone) and Jimi Hendrix; another guy at the Stones and the Beatles. Another guy was listening to Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaría. Another guy was listening to Miles Davis and John Coltrane… For me, it was like being in college.

CARLOS SANTANA MARIA MARIA

“Maria Maria” is a song by Santana featuring The Product G&B. The song was produced by Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis. At the 2000 Grammy Awards, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Although other lead singers on the album received awards, The Product G&B did not receive a Grammy Award. Marc Anthony also sang on a version of the song.

The song reached number one in Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. In the latter country, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks, fending off competition from Faith Hill, Toni Braxton and Marc Anthony.

In 2008, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Hot 100 chart, Billboard compiled its list of the top 100 songs since the chart began in various categories. “Maria Maria” came in at number 96 on Billboard’s All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs list, and number two on Billboard’s Hot 100 Latin Songs of All Time list. It was later named the 14th most successful song from 2000 to 2009, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade.

Carlos Santana collaborated with chef Roberto Santibañez to open five restaurants of the same name, after the song. The majority are located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and other locations are in Arizona and Texas.
Producer Wyclef Jean revealed that the melodic riff was inspired by the Wu-Tang Clan song “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit”.
