BIOGRAPHY OF CARL LEWIS

Carl Lewis is an African-American former track and field athlete who won nine Olympic gold medals, one Olympic silver medal, and 10 World Championship medals, including eight gold. His career spanned from 1979 to 1996, when he last won an Olympic event. He is one of only three Olympians to have won a gold medal in the same individual event at four consecutive Olympic Games.

AGE OF CARL LEWIS

He was born on July 1, 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. He is now 58 years old as of 2019.

CARL LEWIS FAMILY

Frederick Carlton Lewis is the son of two-star athletes who attended the Tuskegee Institute. His father, Bill, ran track and played football; his mother, Evelyn, was a world-class hurdler (a runner who jumps over a series of hurdles) who represented the United States at the 1951 Pan American Games. By the time Carl, the third of four children, was born , his parents trained young athletes in track and field events.

When Carl was still young, his family moved to Willingboro, New Jersey. There his parents worked as high school teachers and founded the Willingboro Track Club. Lewis was not as talented as his brothers and sister, and his parents encouraged him to take music lessons instead. He continued to work out and practice the long jump in his backyard, determined to improve. Small and skinny, Lewis competed in track competitions, losing far more than he won. Yet his dedication and confidence caught the eye of Jesse Owens himself when meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Owens urged other children to follow the example of the “brave little guy”.

Carl Lewis is married to Maria Lewis and they both have their child Bakim Lewis. Bakim graduated from basic combat training in 2015 and joined the army.

CARL LEWIS EDUCATION

Carl Lewis graduated from Willingboro High School in 1979 and was ranked among the top high school track athletes in the nation. In 1979, Lewis entered the University of Houston (Texas) on an athletic scholarship. He worked with trainer Tom Tellez, who suggested improvements in Lewis’ jumping style. After just one year of college, Lewis qualified for the 1980 Olympic team, only to see an opportunity pass when former President Jimmy Carter was born in 1994.

CARL LEWIS OLYMPICS

Lewis was first coached by his father, who also coached other local athletes to elite status. At age 13, Lewis began competing in the long jump and became a promising athlete while being coached by Andy Dudek and Paul Minore at Willingboro High School in his hometown of Willingboro Township, New Jersey. He ranked fourth on the all-time list of junior world long jumpers.

Many colleges tried to recruit Lewis, and he chose to enroll at the University of Houston where Tom Tellez was coaching. Tellez would continue to coach Lewis throughout his career. A few days after graduating from high school in 1979, Lewis broke the high school long jump record with a jump of 8.13 m (26 ft 8 in).

By the end of 1979, Lewis was ranked fifth in the world in the long jump, according to Track and Field News. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Lewis competed in four events with realistic prospects of winning each of them to match Jesse Owens’ performance at the 1936 Games in Berlin.

Lewis not only lost the most publicized showdown in track and field in 1987, he also lost his father. When William Lewis died of cancer aged 60, Lewis placed the gold medal he had won in the 100m in 1984 in his hand to be buried with him. “Don’t worry,” he told his mother. ‘I’ll have another one.’

Lewis repeatedly mentioned his father as a motivating factor for the 1988 season. “A lot of things happened to me in the last year, especially my father’s death. It has led me to re-educate myself to be the best I can be this season,” he said after beating Johnson in Zurich on August 17.
