INTERVIEW WITH CARL ANTHONY PAYNE II
INTERVIEW WITH CARL ANTHONY PAYNE ABOUT PLAYING REID IN TLC BIOPIC
Q: What role do you play in TLC’s new biopic?
Carl Anthony Payne II: I play LA Reid. The “big” LA Reid.
Q: What sort of relationship does LA Reid have with the members of TLC?
Carl Anthony Payne II: LA Reid, along with his wife Pebbles, was responsible for launching TLC’s career. He was the driving force of the group. Pebbles brought him TLC, pretty much. Did you also know that Pebbles is responsible for Usher, Babyface, and even Bobby Brown’s career. In fact, LA Reid was also brought in as a judge on X-Factor. He’s an amazing music mogul.
Q: So you went to school at Howard University? Do you frequent the DMV often?
Carl Anthony Payne II: Not so often. I am usually very busy working. I was there recently for a month and a half. I was the ringmaster of the UniverSOUL circus and I signed up to do it for a month and a half. I had a great time there! I really enjoyed shopping and eating in Georgetown. The cool place for me was the national port.
Q: What’s your favorite place in Baltimore?
Carl Anthony Payne II: The best place for me is at the water’s edge because the harbor is my favorite place. The restaurants there are also cool.
Q: Are you still recognized for your role as Theo’s best friend on ‘The Cosby Show’?
Carl Anthony Payne II: Everywhere I Go! Since I did another show that’s in syndication. Some recognize me from both or the other. It’s generational now, the gap is very wide. You can be 7 or even 60 and still recognize me on the show. As they are both good shows, this is the best experience.
Q: Do you still keep in touch with Martin’s Castmates?
Carl Anthony Payne II: Yeah! Tischina and Tommy. Tommy is a very, very good friend to me. He is like a brother to me.
Q: What are your future plans?
Carl Anthony Payne II: I’m developing a web series that deals with the world of motocross. I’m in talks with several producers who are in talks to develop my own sitcom.
Q: Any last words?
Carl Anthony Payne II:For the record, I love the DMV! When I was there I had the most fun! I appreciate the region’s continued support. I also want to add that Hollywood is always changing and people who are inspired to act should go there. I also want to add that the television we watch today is not what it was then. We had quality shows that were inspiring, clean and made with effort. Now most programs air reality shows like ‘Real House Wives of New Jersey’ and that doesn’t define reality. My goal and my mission is to define reality by delivering quality television. Shows like ‘Martin’ and ‘The Cosby Show’ are quality shows and that’s what we don’t.
Q: Good point, I can see how reality TV is taking over airtime. Do you use social networks? I know a lot of fans want to connect with you!
Carl Anthony Payne II: Yes, I have a Twitter account @TheCarlPayne and I Instagram @The Real Carl Payne. If you must know, I hate social media. It’s so silly to me and I mean, I get it. However, I don’t think it’s a good or even a necessity for many reasons.
