CARA ROBERTSON LIZZIE BORDEN

The Trial of Lizzie Borden is a book written by Cara Robertson.

The Trial of Lizzie Borden tells the true story of one of the most sensational murder trials in American history. When Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally hacked to death in Fall River, Massachusetts, in August 1892, the arrest of the couple’s youngest daughter, Lizzie, turned the case into international news and her trial into an unprecedented spectacle in American history. Journalists flocked to the scene. Well-known chroniclers occupied prominent seats in the courtroom. The accused was scrutinized relentlessly for signs of guilt or innocence. Everyone – rich and poor, suffragists and social conservatives, jurists and secularists – had an opinion on Lizzie Borden’s guilt or innocence. Was she a cold-blooded murderer or an unjustly persecuted woman? Did she do it or not?

Popular fascination with the Borden murders and its central enigmatic character has endured for over a hundred years. Immortalized in rhyme, retold and retold in every genre imaginable, the murders have secured a place in America’s pantheon of mythical horror, but typically snatched from its historic moment. In contrast, Cara Robertson explores the stories Lizzie Borden culture wanted and expected to hear and how those stories influenced debate inside and outside the courtroom. Based on transcripts of Borden’s court proceedings, contemporary newspaper accounts, unpublished local accounts, and recently unearthed letters from Lizzie herself, The Trial of Lizzie Borden offers a window into America to the golden age, presenting its deepest and most disturbing convictions. social anxieties.

FACE ROBINSON CLINIC

There’s no wrong choice as long as you learn something about it, said Cara Robinson, vice president of global marketing, makeup and fragrance for Clinique. Associate Professor Brian Brown, Ph.D., whose marketing class hosted Robinson on April 9, said it’s crucial for students to invite the business community to share these types of information.

“The benefit of guest speakers is the real-world aspect they can bring into the classroom,” Brown said. “I know it sounds a bit cliché – the ‘real world’ – and it’s a bit overused, but it’s one thing for me to cover certain topics and content in class via a textbook. It’s a whole different matter to have someone who actually does it or has experienced the particular marketing concepts and strategic concepts to come into a classroom and describe it. ‘

But perhaps even more memorable than the marketing and business topics is the guest speakers’ careers and personal experiences, Brown said.

For example, Robinson talked about the path she took after graduating from high school — in Spanish. She spent a year teaching in Puerto Rico before returning to the United States to pursue her MBA. But rather than regretting the time she didn’t spend in business, Robinson appreciates how living in Puerto Rico has enhanced her understanding of other cultures – a huge asset in her work with global marketing.

“It was really great to hear how she went to Puerto Rico and how she took her skills she learned there, applied them to the real world, and applied them to her job when she got back,” Hargis said. “So I think it’s very encouraging to know that now that I want to join the Peace Corps, when I come back, I know I’m going to be able to use what I learned there.”

Other students, such as Jarvia Hardley, found Robinson’s journey — earning a degree in Spanish before her MBA in brand management — personally interesting.

“It’s not like, when you come to school, you have to do X, Y and Z,” he says. “You can sort of work your way through things, which she did and she turned out to be very successful. So it’s very stimulating, especially for me. …Having speakers like today really give me a real perspective on the world of marketing.
