This morning the news broke that Prince Charles has tested positive for COVID-19. A palace source told City & Country that the heir to the throne remains in “good spirits” despite having mild symptoms. The source also said the prince’s illness ‘is not at risk of escalating into a more serious case’
His wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. It is understood that Camilla is worried about Charles, but remains optimistic. A source notes that the couple are following guidelines to isolate themselves separately for seven days.
Both Charles and Camilla have been at Birkhall, the couple’s home on the grounds of Balmoral, the Queen’s residence in Scotland, since March 22. They were tested by the NHS in Aberdeenshire at Birkhall after Charles began to experience mild symptoms. Although there is apparently a shortage of tests in the UK, and the NHS Scotland website notes that “generally you will only be tested for COVID-19 if you have a serious illness which requires hospitalization”, Clarence House reports that both Charles and Camilla “met the required criteria for testing.”
Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer also issued a statement about the couple’s testing. “Dr. Catherine Calderwood, Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, has confirmed that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay have been tested for COVID-19 for clinical reasons,” it read. “She is very pleased to confirm that both remain healthy.”
Charles’ last public engagement – and last meeting with the Queen – was on March 12. Buckingham Palace said the monarch is “in good health” and “following all appropriate advice regarding her well-being”.
