- While studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology , he worked as a copyboy in the art department of Women’s Wear Daily , which was a popular fashion magazine.
- In 1968 he started his iconic Calvin Klein Limited as a $10,000 coat business in the York Hotel . His company’s sales in the first season reached over $500,000. In 1977, his brand recorded sales of more than $30 million.
- When he began his rise in fashion, his name was American Yves St Laurent.
- He became a household name in the late ’70s after his brand used 13-year-old Brooke Shields in the infamous ad campaign for a new line of jeans. The commercial was banned in the US. Amid the controversy, he managed to sell a record number of jeans. They sold more than 200,000 pairs in one day.
- In February 1978, his 11-year-old daughter, Marci, was kidnapped and he was asked to pay a ransom of $100,000. Police eventually arrested Marci’s babysitter Paule Ransay, her half-brother Dominique, and Dominique’s boyfriend, Cecil Wiggins. Paule Ransay later claimed that he and Klein’s lover planned to kidnap his daughter for some promotional purposes before launching his new line of clothes and perfumes.
- In 1995, he was embroiled in a major controversy when his new ad campaign, featuring teenage models in motel rooms preparing for pornographic auditions, was deemed child pornography by the US Department of Justice . The company had to withdraw the ads.
