BIOGRAPHY OF CAIN VELASQUEZ | CAIN VELAZQUEZ | WHO IS CAIN VELASQUEZ?
Cain Velasquez is a Mexican-American mixed martial artist who is best known for twice winning the Ultimate Fighting Championship by defeating Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos. He is currently ranked 3rd in the official UFC heavyweight rankings.
The UFC describes him as one of the most feared and popular MMA fighters of recent times. He earned the nickname “Cardio Cain” for his tremendous stamina, which allows him to relentlessly fight aggression.
He is also known for his one-punch power. He usually wins his fights either by punching or by decision and does not attempt submission.
As a child, he was motivated by the sacrifices of his father, who illegally crossed the US-Mexico border in search of a better life. He learned from his father that with hard work and consistent effort, any goal can be achieved.
Proud of his Mexican heritage, he wears the Mexican flag every time he fights. Although he is not fluent in Spanish, he has made appearances on Spanish-language TV channels like Telemundo and Univision, as well as Mexican channel Televisa Deportes. Some fans have longed for Brock Lesnar to be placed on a WWE program with someone who at least appears to be a legitimate threat to the former UFC heavyweight champion.
Well, that doesn’t get more legit than the man who took Lesnar’s UFC heavyweight strap nine years ago. On Friday night’s conclusion of WWE SmackDown on Fox, UFC heavyweight Cain Velasquez made his WWE debut and immediately took on his former Octagon rival.
Lesnar won the WWE Championship in seconds on Friday by dethroning Kofi Kingston. As Lesnar celebrated his title win, Rey Mysterio’s music hit as some speculated he was coming for some semblance of revenge for Lesnar’s attack that took place Monday night on Raw.
Mysterio didn’t come alone, however, as he was flanked by longtime friend Velasquez atop the ramp. Velasquez took off his shirt, hit the ring and proceeded to punch Lesnar to the mat until the new WWE Champion retired.
Lesnar teased getting back in the ring for more of a fight, but in typical heel fashion, the “Beast Incarnate” didn’t want it. Velasquez, 37, defeated Lesnar in dominant fashion at UFC 121 in October 2010 via first-round TKO to end the latter’s heavyweight championship reign after just two successful title defenses.
He last appeared in the Octagon earlier this year in February, a first-round TKO loss to rising heavyweight Francis Ngannou, which also resulted in a serious knee injury. “That’s definitely my goal,” Velasquez told ESPN. “My family is in it, they love it. They are super excited. I haven’t seen them excited about something like this in a while. It’s cool.’
Velasquez has been nurturing the idea of a transition to professional wrestling a lot throughout the past year. Last summer, he took a trip to the WWE Performance Center where he spent time training under his belt.
This year, the longtime pro wrestling fan has taken the transition one step further, competing for Mexico’s top promotion, AAA, in both its annual TripleMania event as well as the foray of the company in the United States inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.
According to a report by MMAjunkie’s Mike Bohn, Velasquez intends to retire from the USADA tryout pool. This move would end his time as a UFC fighter and mark a move into professional wrestling. However, Vasquez recently noted that he would only become a full-time wrestler after necessary knee surgery.
It’s unclear if WWE plans to run the Lesnar-Velasquez schedule immediately or perhaps keep it running until WrestleMania 36 in Tampa, Florida. Depending on how badly the knee surgery Vasquez needs, postponing a potential match could provide plenty of time for recovery while Lesnar argues with Mysterio.
Reports recently surfaced that there’s a bit of a bidding war going on for Velasquez’s services between WWE and upstart All Elite Wrestling, with the latter looking to be the frontrunner as Velasquez teamed up and trained with him. the AEW Superstar and Executive Vice President. Cody Rhodes during his time with AAA.
In the end, though, it looks like WWE won and we’re on the way to one of the most intriguing feuds we’ve seen Lesnar embroiled in since returning to the company in April 2012.
CAIN VELASQUEZ EDUCATION
Cain Velasquez was born in Salinas, California to Efrain and Isabel Velasquez. Efrain moved to the United States from Sinaloa, Mexico as an undocumented immigrant, where he met American-born Isabel.
They started a relationship and later got married, which allowed Efrain to obtain American citizenship. The Velasquez family had three children: Efrain Jr., Adela and Cain.
Velasquez grew up in Yuma, Arizona. He graduated from Kofa High School, where he compiled a 110-10 record in four years of wrestling, including winning the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship twice.
Velasquez also played soccer for three years. As a senior, he captained his wrestling and soccer teams. As a football player, he played linebacker
After high school, he attended Iowa Central Community College, wrestling for one season (2001–02) and winning the NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division (285 lb limit).
Then Velasquez transferred to Arizona State University. He wrestled for the Sun Devils for three seasons and compiled an 86-17 record, ranking 5th in the nation in 2005 and 4th in 2006. While at ASU, Velasquez also wrestled alongside future fighters in the ‘UFC Ryan Bader and CB Dollaway.

With his victory over Nogueira, Velasquez earned a UFC Heavyweight Championship bout with then-champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. UFC President Dana White announced via SportsNation that the UFC would bring back the UFC Primetime to promote Lesnar against Velasquez. Velasquez defeated Lesnar via first-round TKO, earning Knockout of the Night honors.
Velasquez suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder during his fight with Lesnar and is expected to be sidelined for at least six to eight months. Shoulder surgery was successful, and Velasquez planned to return as early as fall 2011.
Velasquez was scheduled to make his first title defense against Junior dos Santos, with a target date of November 19, 2011, at UFC 139, but the fight was later moved to November 12, 2011, to headline the first UFC event on Fox 1.
Velasquez suffered his first defeat, via KO (punches), 1 minute and 4 seconds into the first round. Although not public information at the time, it was later revealed that Dos Santos already had a minor knee injury (a torn meniscus),
and took a cortisone injection in his knee before the fight, followed by reports that Velasquez had re-injured his rotator cuff about a week before the fight. Junior dos Santos would undergo knee surgery after the fight.
Velasquez was originally scheduled to fight Frank Mir on May 26, 2012, at UFC 146. However, Mir was moved to face Junior dos Santos after Alistair Overeem was suspended for high testosterone levels. Velasquez instead faced Antônio Silva. Velasquez defeated Silva via first-round TKO, in a fight that saw Silva bleeding profusely from his forehead.
After the fight, Dana White strongly hinted that Velasquez would be the next fighter to challenge for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. It is widely believed that the reason White made the decision to have the rematch with Dos Santos at such an unexpected time was because both fighters were injured in their first fight.
A rematch was expected with Junior dos Santos on September 22, 2012 at UFC 152. However, it was later announced by Dana White that the rematch date had been set for December 29 at UFC 155.
In the rematch, Velasquez defeated Dos Santos in a dominating performance via unanimous decision (50–45, 50–43, and 50–44) to regain the UFC heavyweight title.
Velasquez became the first fighter in UFC history to post triple-digit strikeouts in major strikes and double-digit losses in takedowns landed in a single fight, earning 111 major strikes and 11 takedowns in his second fight against Dos Santos.
In his first title defense, Velasquez defeated Antônio Silva in a rematch on May 25, 2013, at UFC 160. He defeated him via TKO (punches) at 1:21 seconds into the first round.
A rubber match with Junior dos Santos took place at UFC 166 on October 19, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He defended his title for the second time by defeating dos Santos again in a mostly one-sided affair ending in TKO at 3:09 of the fifth round.
On April 29, 2014, the UFC announced that Velasquez and Fabrício Werdum had been selected as coaches for the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, with the two set to face off on November 15, 2014 at UFC 180.
However, on October 21, 2014, it was announced that Velasquez had pulled out of the bout due to a torn meniscus and MCL sprain in his right knee, and would be replaced by Mark Hunt. On October 23, 2014, Velasquez underwent successful surgery to repair his torn meniscus.
A rescheduled fight with interim UFC heavyweight champion Fabrício Werdum took place on June 13, 2015, at UFC 188. In a back-and-forth affair, Velasquez lost the fight via guillotine submission. in the third round.

The MMA fighter trains with the American Kickboxing Academy. He has different trainers for each of his individual disciplines, namely Daniel Cormier in wrestling, Javier Mendez in Muay Thai, Leandro Vieira in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (for which Velasquez holds a black belt), and Joe Grosso in bodybuilding.

He usually starts with a jab, follows with a hard right, then adds hooks and uppercuts as the fight progresses. He is robust in the clinch, wherever he throws long melds that usually end in a takedown.
