I’m sure you are wondering how we came about  Burundi as the poorest country in the World since they are over 200 countries in the world and over 7 billion people and there is no accurate data to measure the financial standing of everyone in the World

However, in economics, the  GDP per capita is often considered the standard metric in comparing how poor or wealthy countries are in relation to each other.

GDP per Capita is also synonymous with Gross National Income per capita which is a measure of the country’s total income divided by its population.

Burundi is a landlocked country in east Africa often considered as the poorest country in the world due to it low GDP Per capita which is presently stands at 274.01 USD making it the poorest country in the World.

Why Is Burundi The Poorest Country in the World?

Many of the countries on the lowest end of the wealth spectrum are countries that are often caught in political crises, conflict, famine and climate change.  These devastating factors keep the countries trapped in cycles of poverty because their economic sources (Agriculture, Industry and Services) do not have sufficient infrastructures to sustain their productivity.

For reference, Burundi experienced a civil war 15 years ago that claimed more than 500,000 lives and have produced about a million refugees, and despite the civil war formally ending 15 years ago, the country is stil plauged with aggravating factors like  Lack of infrastructure, endemic corruption and other security concerns.

Due to the civil war, poverty in Burundi increased from 48 to 67 percent, presently 90% of its nearly 12 million citizens relying on subsistence agriculture for thier livelihood.

The country is also experiencing an high level of Food scarcity and access to water and sanitation remains very low, and less than 5% of the population has electricity. All these problems, have been worsened by the pandemic making them the Poorest country in the World.
