Buhari appoints Major General Farouk Yahaya as new COAS

President Muhammed Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff following the death of Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

The new COAS is a former General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter-Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, codenamed Operation HADIN KAI.

His appointment came barely six days after the former Chief of Army Staff, Attahiru Ibrahim, and 10 officers lost their lives in a plane crash in Abuja.

However,  a statement signed by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Acting Director Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, said:
“The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

“Prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter-Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, code-named Operation HADIN KAI.”
