Bubba smith
Retired football player Bubba Smith made a name for himself around the world as Hightower, the hulking seven-foot-tall hunk who couldn’t drive in Police Academy . Due to the unusual success of the tape in the 80, Smith repeated in five of the six sequels. The actor passed away at the age of 66, on August 3, 2011.
Born on February 28, 1945 in Orange (Texas), Charles Aaron Smith was known by everyone as “Bubba” from a young age. He started out as a soccer player on the Michigan State University team. He unleashed a real furor among the fans, and went on to win the much appreciated Super Bowl, with the Baltimore Colts.
Upon retiring from professional sports in the late 1970s, he began as an actor with a small role in Wonder Woman , and became a regular on series such as Charlie’s Angels , Eight is Enough , and Hart and Hart . He was also one of the protagonists of Blue Thunder (series) , a television version of the eponymous film about a sophisticated helicopter, which remained at 11 episodes due to its low pull.
In 1984, he signed to play the huge cadet Moses Hightower in Police Academy , where he was laughing, especially with the gag in which Mahoney ( Steve Guttenberg ) had to remove the car seat so that Bubba could get inside. Despite being a comedy with few pretensions, it achieved unprecedented success, so that six sequels were shot. Smith reprized in all but Crazy Police Academy: Moscow Mission , the seventh and last. In the late ’90s he promptly reprized as Hightower in Police Academy: The Series , starring a new group of wannabe cops.
Although Smith did not achieve the same success again, he became a luxury guest on soap operas, such as Sabrina, the things of witches , MacGyver or Married with children . He also took part in some minor films such as El silencio de los borregos .
The details of the private life of the athlete and actor, who appeared dead at his home in Los Angeles, apparently due to natural causes, are not known.
