He is considered one of the great authors of the postmodern generation that emerged in the United States in the 1950s, along with Joseph Heller (“Trap 22”), Thomas Pynchon (“The Rainbow of Gravity”); and Kurt Vonnegut (“Slaughterhouse number 5”), among others. Bruce Jay Friedman, who apart from succeeding with his novels and plays earned an Oscar nomination, died on June 3, 2020, at the age of 90 at his Brooklyn residence, as confirmed by his children. For years, he suffered from neuropathy.

Born on April 26, 1930 in the New York neighborhood of the Bronx, Bruce Jay Friedman studied journalism at the University of Missouri. When he finished, he joined the army, which assigned him to the Air Force offices during the Korean War. Upon graduating he triumphed with his books, marked by black humor, “Stern” and “Mother’s Kisses” are considered to be his best works.

Divorced in 1978 from Ginger Howard, with whom he had three children, he joined Patricia O’Donohue, who gave him another offspring. Starting  in the 1980s, he became a successful screenwriter for feature films such as 1, 2, 3… Splash , of which he wrote the first draft. His work earned him an Oscar nomination, shared with  Lowell Ganz , Bábaloo Mandel and Brian Grazer . He also wrote Locos de remate and Marriage compulsive .

Woody Allen , a great admirer of his work, cast him as an actor in Another Woman , Husbands and Wives , and Celebrity . Bruce Jay Friedman  also played a role in Nora Ephron ‘s You’ve Got Mail .
