BIOGRAPHY OF BRIT HUME

Brit Hume is an American conservative television commentator and political commentator. He worked with ABC News for 23 years where he contributed to World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Nightline and This Week. He also served as ABC’s chief White House correspondent from 1989 to 1996.

In February 1998, Brits son Hume committed suicide in his apartment in Arlington, Virginia. During the months leading up to his death, Hume who was an alcoholic resumed drinking. The night before Brit’s son committed suicide, he was jailed for drunk driving and he also attempted to hang himself in the US police cell in Park. Sandy was evaluated in a mental institution and released. Her son then returned home and killed himself with a shotgun after leaving a long note expressing shame at the events of the previous night.

He regularly serves as a panelist on FOX’s weekly public affairs program, FOX News Sunday and contributes to all major political coverage. In 1996, Hume left ABC for the fledgling Fox News Network for which his wife had recently become Washington bureau chief. At Hume’s last press conference as ABC’s chief White House correspondent, President Clinton told him, “I think we all think you’ve done an extraordinary professional job under Republican and Democrat.”

Hume became the editor of Fox News in Washington. After therefore starting his news at Fox News, he was in talks about launching a Washington-based television news program for 6 p.m. time slot. The Lewinsky scandal began in January 1998, and his wife told him the well-known story that he should start the show immediately. The Special Report with Brit debuted that night in that timeslot.

He said at the start of his time at Fox that “we’ve made progress and built up some following and the Lewinsky scandal got a lot of attention in the 2000 election, but what really did was the recount in Florida – that was great for us because people were worried about how it might come out in a place where they could trust the coverage, people who were conservative Republicans or weren’t worried.

And we really made an effort to cover this story well. And that built our audience. The show was the number one cable news program at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Period for several years. In July 2008, it was announced that Hume would retire as Special Report anchor at the end of the year, but would remain on Fox News in a different role. He hosted his final episode as Special Report anchor on December 23, 2008, announcing that Bret Baier, then-chief White House correspondent for Fox News, would be his replacement.

On September 6, 2016, Hume was named anchor of On the Record after that show’s longtime anchor Greta Van Susteren abruptly left Fox News. It served as the anchor of the program until the end of the 2016 elections.

Hume’s first show as host of On the Record drew 2.4 million viewers, a double-digit increase over Van Susteren’s average viewership in 2016. On November 4, 2016, it was announced that Tucker Carlson would host a new show in the former On the Record Period on November 14, 2016.
