Brian Urlacher (/ɜːrlˈækər/) is a former NFL American football linebacker born May 25, 1978 in Pasco, Washington, United States. Throughout his 13-year career, he played for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. (NFL). Urlacher was recognized as a consensus All-American while playing college football for the University of New Mexico and became one of the school’s most decorated athletes.
In the 2000 NFL Draft, the Bears selected Brian Urlacher with the ninth overall pick. He quickly established himself as one of the most productive defensive players in the NFL. Urlacher was voted to eight Pro Bowls after winning the NFL Rookie of the Year Award in 2000 and winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. His style of play, accomplishments and reputation made him one of the most popular players on the team. Urlacher briefly analyzed Fox Sports 1 after his retirement from professional football. Urlacher was born in Pasco, Washington, to Bradley and Lavoyda Urlacher. He was raised by his parents along with his younger brother Casey. Casey had a brief career in the Arena Football League and was later elected mayor of Mettawa, Illinois in 2013.
Urlacher was raised by his mother Lavoyda and siblings in Lovington, New Mexico after splitting from his parents. Urlacher’s mother, Lavoyda Lenard Urlacher, died of unreported causes in 2011.

Urlacher majored in criminology at the University of New Mexico and played for the New Mexico Lobos football team. Dennis Franchione , the Lobos head coach, converted Urlacher to linebacker, but often left him on the sidelines in favor of more experienced players. The team finished with winning records during Urlacher’s first two years and even took a trip to 1997 Bol Insight.com . The team’s success prompted Franchione to leave New Mexico in favor of Texas Christian University. His departure prompted the school to hire former UCLA coach Rocky Long .
Brian Urlacher thrived under Long’s tenure. Urlacher played a more versatile role on offense and defense and received more playing time. Long converted Urlacher to ‘ Lobo-Back ‘, a cross between a linebacker and free safety, and placed him in a 3- 3-5 defense pattern. He spent a lot of time training with Bronco Mendenhall, the team’s defensive coordinator, who helped Urlacher hone his skills as a defensive back. Long also used Urlacher as a return specialist and wide receiver throughout his final two years with the Lobos.
