BRIAN DIETZEN NCIS
In the television series NCIS, Dietzen plays the role of Dr. James “Jimmy” Palmer. Jimmy is an assistant medical examiner who first appears in the episode “Split Decision”. He becomes Mallard’s assistant after Gerald Jackson’s incapacitation. Jimmy identifies himself as a victim of a “mild” case of diabetes mellitus in the episode “In The Dark”.
He often seems intimidated by Gibbs, especially when he goes into one of his weird rambling explanations of something that hasn’t been asked.
Part of the reason Dr. Mallard and Jimmy are often not at the crime scene until Gibbs and his team arrive has to do with Dr. Mallard’s emphasis on Jimmy being a horrible driver and always gets lost. Jimmy tries to defend himself by pointing out that Ducky is the one with the card.
Jimmy was named after former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer but doesn’t like baseball.
He is the central character in the episode “About Face” where he must regain his memory to track down a suspect in a murder case and his attempted murder.
Much like Ducky, Jimmy talks to the dead, though he’s much more irreverent, sometimes raising not just eyebrows, but doubts about his analytical abilities in the process. Some episodes depict an ongoing illicit office romance between Jimmy and Michelle Lee. The two make excuses for working late and are seen going in and out from under the autopsy table.
In the episode “Last Man Standing”, Jimmy admits to Gibbs and Vance that he and Agent Lee “have been doing it” for a while. He says, however, that he broke it off because he felt “used.”
Jimmy takes over as Acting Chief Medical Examiner of NCIS in Season 15. This is after Ducky takes a sabbatical from NCIS to teach at a medical school in New York. In “Bears and Cubs”, Ducky announces his official retirement from his full-time position at NCIS and permanently promotes Jimmy to Chief Medical Examiner.
