Raymer recently became a partner of local donut chain Donut Mania. Since getting involved, he’s expanded Donut Mania to four locations, with plans for 10 more in the next three years.

INTERVIEW WITH RAYMER ABOUT AQUARIUMS, TELEVISION, DONUTS AND OTHER FUTURE PROJECTS.

Review-Journal: How did you end up turning an aquarium business into a TV series?

Raymer: When the economy was bad and things weren’t going well in my life, I used to watch ‘Orange County Choppers’. And I used to come up to these guys and say, ‘Man, we could be on TV right now. Those Orange County Choppers guys aren’t exactly funny. They’re just a little abusive to each other. But they make a great product and turn motorcycles into rockets. We could turn aquariums into rockets.

Raymer: So I went to UNLV film school and found a teacher who showed me the ropes. And it took me three years to film the pilot. And we bought it. And here we are nine years later.

Review-Journal: You’re not producing the show yourself. Are you comfortable with how you are portrayed on the air?

Raymer: I love what (the producers) are doing. The show is not scripted. Everything that comes out of my mouth comes out of my mouth.

Loading… Loading… When we started the show, we had producers from Animal Planet. And I make fun of Wayde a lot, but I never really call him fat. I use another terminology with food, and this and that. But I don’t call it fat. And they came up to me early on and said, ‘You really need to stop with the big jokes.’ And I said, “I’m not going to stop. Have you ever watched ‘Sanford and Son’? Did Fred ever stop calling model Lamont? It’s the exact same reason why I will never stop with Wayde. It’s just who we are. “This show is authentic.

Review-Journal: Do you have one or more favorite tanks you’ve created over the years?

Raymer: My favorite tanks are the ones we do on the show, because I can see the customer reaction. We ship thousands of aquariums a year and never see the customer. But when we do something spectacular (on the show) and I see the face of that kid or that family member who’s been waiting for the aquarium for a long time, that makes it special.

Review-Journal: You have hundreds of tanks in Las Vegas, and you even provide visitors to your factory with a map of where to find many. If you had to choose three to send people to see, which would they be?

Raymer: The first one I would send them to would be my Summerlin donut shop. Of course, I want them to see my store.

And they haven’t seen (this tank) on TV yet. I would probably also send them to the Silverton Casino, the Bass Pro Shops. We installed the windows there. And then I would probably send them to a local restaurant or two (which have our aquariums).

Probably Rollin Smoke or Crab Corner, as I like the food there. Plus, it gives them the chance to get local food, support some local businesses, and see some of our aquariums.

Review-Journal: What brought you into the donut business?

Raymer: I’ve been doing this for 22 years now. I wrote the show nine years ago. I wanted some excitement in my life. I had gotten to the point where this activity was monotonous.

Review-Journal: How do you bring your creativity into Donut Mania products?

I’m not the real baker…but I’m a social media guru. I’m all over social media. I checked out all the donut companies. I get ideas, and we give them different twists. Maybe it’s something in another country that I bring back to my partner. We want to create excitement, and that’s what I mean.

Review-Journal: There was also talk of opening a full restaurant for you. What is the status?

Raymer: The restaurant is going to happen 100%, and it’s going to be on Las Vegas Boulevard. Funding didn’t come as fast as I thought it would. Our first restaurant is going to open in Minnesota, hopefully by the end of 2018, or if not, early 2019. And then towards the end of 2019, we’re going to open on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Review-Journal: Personal motto?

Raymer: Fail to plan, plan to fail.

Daily ritual?

Raymer: I wake up and immediately jump out of bed, get dressed and go straight to work.

Review-Journal: Animals?

Raymer: A dog, Bailey and an American bulldog. She was born on St. Patrick’s Day. And the fish.

Review-Journal: Hobbies / Collections?

Raymer: Sports Memories. Anything I can get signed by athletes or celebrities.

Review-Journal: The Food I Could Eat Every Day?

Raymer: Chicken Parma. I love chicken parm.
