Maturing after graduating from college, Bret began coaching the football team at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. With his Wisconsin Badgers team, Bret was able to finish the regular season with a 14-0 win over San Diego State. He was only the third Wisconsin coach to win his first three games. Amazingly, in November 2006, he became the first head coach in Big Ten history to win ten games in a first season. Thanks to his contribution to the team, he was nominated for the Coach of the Year award, but he just missed out on Gene Chizik. Then, on December 4, 2012, Bret left Wisconsin to coach the Arkansas Razorbacks. His first season with the Razorbacks wasn’t quite what he was looking for. The team has had its worst record since entering the competition in 1992.

Slowly but surely things started to improve with Bielema and his team. However, despite his best efforts in the first three seasons, the improvement was extremely minor. Then, in the fourth season, things ended with two embarrassing losses in a row. After his five years for Arkansas, Bret was fired from his position and he left the team with the worst coaching record in school history.
