INTERVIEW WITH BRENDAN SEXTON III
Q: Did you base Belko on anyone in particular?
Brendan Sexton III: I didn’t base it on anyone and I don’t have a muse for Belko, but because of the end of the last episode of the first season, everyone started calling me Travis Belko in the honor of Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. Everyone was half hoping I’d shave my head – I think Joel [Kinnaman] was hoping I’d shave my head. It all started with Joel.
Q: You get a little roughed up during the interrogation scene (in episode 10, “I’ll let you know when I get there”). Was it fun to play?
Brendan Sexton III: Yeah, that was great fun. Joel likes to throw his weight when he can, so I kinda bumped myself during one of the takes. I just laughed after that.
Q: How were you hit?
Brendan Sexton III: Joel manhandled me and threw me in the chair and I didn’t land properly. There was a stunt coordinator and I’m grateful he was there, but we wanted to do our own thing. We wanted to choreograph it ourselves. I trust Joel enough and he trusts me enough not to hurt me.
Q: Who would be the fiercest interrogator in real life: Mireille Enos or Joel Kinnaman?
Brendan Sexton III: Actually, I couldn’t watch Mireille. She is calmer. She keeps you guessing, whereas Joel would put it on the table too quickly. Mireille would simply become more stealthy. She wouldn’t even ask you a question, you would just pause.
Q: What was it like filming the scene (in Episode 9, “Undertow”) where Belko and Stan assault Bennet Ahmed? Did you work with a fight choreographer to prepare?
Brendan Sexton III: Absolutely, there was a fight choreographer… It was record breaking cold the night we shot it, and I believe there was a faint fog hovering over the floor. It was just an intense night and we did dozens and dozens of takes. It was incredibly exhausting for all three actors.
Q: Whose idea did Belko get to start beating the rock? Was it improvised?
Brendan Sexton III: This piece was actually made. Only a handful of people knew about it – Veena, the director [Agnieska Holland] and myself. Nobody else knew, so when we did the first take, all the producers and writers were watching the scene on video on the monitors and they were all holding their breath and panting. They had no idea what was going on. Suddenly, the kid laughing and joking on set furiously hits a rock.
Q: So you’re kind of a joker on set?
Brendan Sexton III: Yeah. I mean, I do whatever I have to do to get into character. Sometimes he’s incredibly quiet and sometimes he’s cowardly and clumsy. There’s a lot of nonsense on the set. I’d say I’m one of the biggest dorks. I love to laugh and dance. It’s kind of my nature, although I always end up playing these angry depressing characters.
Q: Who are the other goofballs on the board?
Brendan Sexton III: Joel was definitely a goofball. The biggest was probably Jamie Anne Allman, then Joel was second. And Eric Ladin of course has a dry and biting sense of humor. I believe half of what he says, even though I know better.
Q: Have you been noticed on the street by fans of the show? What are they telling you?
vWhile the season was still airing, people more simply shared their admiration for the show. But now that the first season is over, people have come up to me and bribed me to tell them who did it, saying they had to know.
Q: You have mostly worked on films in the past. How was working on The Killing different?
Brendan Sexton III: The Rhythm. What we basically do is make a feature film every three weeks. And not just any feature film, but with a handheld camera, trying to capture what you can catch. It’s a very ambitious project with big and great camera moves, so as an actor you have to be prepared and on point.
Q: You have the same last name as Brent Sexton, who plays Stan. A relationship at all?
Brendan Sexton III: No relationship, but there were scenes where Brent, Brandon [Jay McLaren] and Brendan were all in the same scene together and it got really confusing for people. So I insisted that people call me Belko.
