After their house in Beverly Hills, California sold in April 2007 for 3 million, in December 2007, Fraser’s publicist announced that the couple had decided to divorce. He planned to attend graduate school in Texas, but stopped in Hollywood on the way and decided to stay there to work in film.
BRENDAN FRASER’S CAREER
Brendan Fraser made a brief appearance as the friend of murder victim Rodney Mark Peterson in the re-enactment of America’s Most Wanted. Fraser made his film debut with a small role in Dogfight in 1991. Fraser got his first starring role in the 1992 comedy film Encino Man where he played a frozen prehistoric caveman who is thawed out in the present day. The film was a moderate success at the box office and is considered a cult film. That same year, Fraser starred with Matt Damon and Chris O’Donnell in School Ties.
He played Steve Nebraska in 1994’s The Scout and Montgomery “Monty” Kessler in With Honors as well as co-starred with Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi in Airheads. Fraser went on to star in films such as Philip Ridley’s The Passion of Darkly Noon in 1995 and The Twilight of the Golds in 1997.
Brendan Fraser had his first major box office success with the 1997 comedy film George of the Jungle based on the animated series of the same title created by Jay Ward.
The Mummy and other shows
Brendan Fraser’s biggest commercial success came with the fantasy adventure film, The Mummy in 1999 and its sequel The Mummy Returns in 2001. Fraser went on to star in several films which either underperformed or only made moderately at the box office, such as Dudley Do-Right in 1999, based on another animated series by Jay Ward, Blast from the Past in 1999, Bedazzled in 2000 and Monkeybone in 2001.
In 1998’s Gods and Monsters, Brendan Fraser also had a dramatic role based on the life of James Whale (Ian McKellen) who directed Frankenstein. The film was written and directed by Bill Condon and follows the loss of creativity, ambiguous sexuality and unlikely connections between a heterosexual gardener and a gay, tortured and sick filmmaker. Fraser lent his voice for the unreleased animated film Big Bug Man. Fraser starred opposite Michael Caine in the critically acclaimed political drama The Quiet American in 2002. He appeared as part of an ensemble in the Oscar-winning film Crash in 2004.
Brendan Fraser has also made appearances on the television shows Scrubs, King of the Hill and The Simpsons. He was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in March 2006, the first American-born actor to receive this honor. Fraser returned for The Mummy’s second sequel after a six-year hiatus in the franchise, released in August 2008 and titled The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Filming began on July 27, 2007 in Montreal and also starred Jet Li as Emperor Han. That same year, Fraser starred in the 3D film adaptation of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and the fantasy film Inkheart (personally chosen for the lead role by the novel’s author Cornelia Funke).
In the West End production of Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in September 2001, Brendan Fraser starred as ‘The Brick, directed by Anthony Page. Cast members included Frances O’Connor, Ned Beatty and Gemma Jones. On January 12, 2002, the show ended, with Fraser garnering many excellent reviews. Fraser starred in a Broadway production of Elling in 2010, but the play closed after 9 performances due to poor reviews.
After starring in critically acclaimed Furry Vengeance in 2010, he moved on from representing William Morris Endeavor to the Creative Artists Agency. Fraser starred in Whole Lotta Sole in 2010, directed by Terry George and in 2011 he was set to play William Tell in The Legend of William Tell: 3D, directed by Eric Brevig, with whom Fraser had also worked in Journey to the Center of the Earth.
In late 2011, filming was delayed and Fraser sued producer Todd Moyer for promised salaries. Moyer then countersued for assault, which Fraser dismissed as a desperate attempt to avoid paying his debt. Currently, the film is in development limbo. In the set of dark comedy Pawn Shop Chronicles, Fraser played an Elvis Presley impersonator. Fraser replaced Ray Liotta in the 2016 Bollywood thriller The Field.
Brendan Fraser then joined the recurring cast of the drama television series The Affair during season 3 where he portrayed the misery-conscious prison guard Gunther. In the FX Trust anthology series, which premiered March 25, 2018, Fraser plays Getty family fixer James Fletcher Chace. Fraser has been cast in the upcoming Doom Patrol TV series which will be a Titans spin-off to replace Jake Michaels as Robotman. He voices the character and appears as Steele in flashbacks while Riley Shanahan provides motion capture for Robotman.
WHERE IS BRENDAN FRASER NOW?
Fraser’s sense of self-worth took a hit in 2003 when he was sexually assaulted. He told GQ the author was Phil Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization that hosts the Golden Globes. Fraser alleges to GQ that the assault took place at a luncheon hosted by the HFPA. In the middle of a crowded room, Phil Berk pinched Fraser’s butt.
It was previously reported that Berk admitted to pinching Fraser but jokingly, according to CinemaBlend. But Fraser told GQ there was more. Fraser said Berk grabbed his genitals, leaving him overcome with panic and the need to run from the room.
Fraser told GQ that he was considering going public with what happened, but he feared that such disclosure could destroy his career. Although he managed to get an apology from Phil Berk, the executive still did not admit any wrongdoing.
In an interview, Fraser said he had become depressed. Fraser also blamed himself, with the experience causing him to “back off”. He said: ‘It made me feel reclusive.’ He also wondered if his complaints prompted the HFPA to blacklist him from events and if others in Hollywood started firing him for roles. He said he was rarely invited back to the Golden Globes after 2003.
Phil Berk told The New York Times in 2005 that he only wrote a letter to Fraser to “appease him” and again denied any wrongdoing. He also denied to GQ that the HFPA retaliated against Fraser. “His career declined through no fault of ours,” Berk told GQ.
Fraser acknowledged that other factors contributed to his career’s decline, but the trauma caused by Phil Berk’s alleged sexual assault was one of them. It upended his sense of “who I was and what I was doing,” he said in the interview. As GQ recounts — nearly 15 years after the alleged assault — Fraser may be experiencing something of a career resurgence.
Currently, Fraser is filming a series called “Condor,” which is based on the classic 1975 book and film, “Three Days of the Condor.” He also stars in ‘Trust,’ an upcoming FX series about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, which begins airing March 25.
