The young actor Brad Renfro was found dead in his Los Angeles residence, during the early hours of January 16, 2008. Although the causes of his death are unknown, it is believed that it is related to his addiction to drugs and alcohol. The tragic event marks the end of a brief but promising career. At the time, it was even said that he could have become as well known as the other Brad, Brad Pitt, with whom he shared the same character in Sleepers .

Brad Renfro leaves behind one of those sad stories that unfortunately often occur in the world of cinema, in which a boy achieves fame very quickly, and does not quite assimilate it. Brad Barron Renfro was born at the same time as Haley Rose, his twin sister, on July 25, 1982. He grew up very close to his grandmother, and when he was ten years old, a casting director sent by the director came to his town. Joel Schumacher , who was looking for the ideal child to star in The Client , an adaptation of a novel by John Grisham . Little Brad took over the role, debuting alongside none other than Susan Sarandon , Tommy Lee Jones and Mary-Louise Parker .. He had a key role, which triggered the plot, as he was a child to whom a guy about to commit suicide explains where the body of a senator is buried, which if found will make it possible to arrest a dangerous mobster. He helps the boy a lawyer (Susan Sarandon), who has just gotten over her alcohol problem.

His performance was so well received that right after he was offered the lead role in Let Nothing Separate Us , a drama in which his character befriended another boy, sick with AIDS. After playing Huckleberry Finn in Tom and Huck , inspired by the famous Mark Twain novels , Renfro was chosen by Barry Levinson for Sleepers . There, he played a boy sent with his four friends to a reformatory, where they suffered harassment and sexual abuse at the hands of his jailer. His character grew, he was played by Brad Pitt , and together with the other three, they put into practice a plan to get revenge.

Renowned director Bryan Singer gave him his best role, the teenager who discovers that his elderly neighbor ( Ian McKellen ) is a former Nazi war criminal, in Summer of Corruption . Renfro’s career seems to be going from strength to strength, but that same year he ends up being arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana. In this way, he gains a reputation as a ‘bad boy’ that in the long run harms him, because directors progressively stop counting on him, thinking that it would be a risky decision. And that he tries to rehabilitate himself. “What I like the most is staying at home quietly, playing blues songs,” confessed Renfro, who is fond of playing the guitar. He became part of Frodad, a rock band.

He then goes on to star in a series of low-key films, including the summer camp teen comedy Wild Adventure , the high school drama Tart. I Want To Try It , and Bully , one of Larry Clark ‘s gritty dramas about drug – and alcohol – addicted teens . But then Terry Zwigoff gives him a leading role in the memorable Ghost World , where he was Josh, a friend of the two protagonists, who works in a supermarket. It was his last great role, because after the failure of Young Wild, a Scorsese-produced youth gangster film, is relegated to by-products that are sometimes released only on DVD. He also played a supporting role in the failed fantasy thriller The Jacket , and a character in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent .

Death comes to the actor when his luck could have changed. He had just finished filming the thriller The Informers , adapted from a Bret Easton Ellis novel . It is a very choral film, in which he shares the spotlight with famous stars, Kim Basinger and Billy Bob Thornton , and other actors like him in low hours, such as Mickey Rourke , Winona Ryder and Brandon Routh ( Superman Returns ).
