Boyd Holbrook is an American actor and model. He has also appeared in films such as Milk, Out of the Furnace, Run All Night, A Walk Among the Tombstones and Gone Girl, and starred as DEA Agent Steve Murphy in the Netflix series Narcos. In 2012, he starred in the Hatfields & McCoys series as “Cap” Hatfield. Recently, he starred as Donald Pierce in Logan (2017) and Thomas Lockhart in In the Shadow of the Moon (2019).

BOYD HOLBROOK SEASON 3 NARCOS

Holbrook’s return to the series had long been questioned. The real Murphy, who along with Pena was famous for taking down Escobar, left Colombia shortly after catching Escobar. Pena and Murphy consulted on the first two seasons.

He recently appeared on the big screen in Logan, spoke to THR about his up-and-coming fate, saying they were “still working” between seasons. “Steve only retired from the DEA I believe two years ago,” he said. “He was very active with the DEA for a long time, so I’ll leave it up to you to find out.

If nothing, I think this show has an amazing opportunity now because Pablo isn’t there, but it’s a really interesting thing. He was delivering drugs directly to Miami, personally. And once he died, the Cali Cartel that regained power said to themselves, “Fuck it, let’s give it to Mexico and let Mexico deal with it and bring it across the border.”

And that’s the evolution of El Chapo and things like that. There’s a really great opportunity for this show, and it’s always been [executive producer] Eric Newman’s plan, it’s called Narcos, it’s not called Pablo Escobar. ‘

Murphy also narrates the series, but Holbrook was confident the material would speak for itself: “I think there are so many opportunities for the series to keep the aesthetic, the look, the feel, and the hyperrealism.

When THR spoke to the real agent, Murphy also wasn’t sure if he or his partner Pena would return for counseling. They confirmed, however, when they left Colombia: after a vacation with his wife, the Murphys returned to the United States in June 1994.

They adopted their second daughter in May before moving back. Pena left in October 1994. Escobar was shot on December 2, 1993. “The agent who was there when the Cali Cartel was taken down, I think you’ll see him in season three,” Murphy said.

The real DEA agents also shed light on the difference between hunting down Escobar and fighting to take down Cali. “The Medellin Cartel was the wild Wild West and Cali was pragmatic,” Pena of the Escobar Cartel explained by comparison. “They were accountants, money laundering professionals. They were more sophisticated and very different cartels. Cali moved a lot of drugs and sent more of them to the United States.
