Book Piracy: NCC Seizes N50m Worth of Pirated Books in Lagos
NCC tackles book piracy, seizes N50m worth of pirated books in Lagos, combating copyright infringement and protecting intellectual property.
The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has seized suspected pirated books worth N50 million in Lagos. This move is part of the commission’s efforts to combat book piracy in Nigeria.
“We’re sending a strong message that we won’t tolerate piracy,” said Mr. Charles Amudipe, who led the operation.
The NCC team visited several bookshops and warehouses in the Yaba area, confiscating suspected pirated materials and arresting owners.
The commission is determined to stop piracy, which hurts authors, publishers, and the entire book industry. “We won’t allow piracy to thrive,” Amudipe emphasized.
The NCC also warns schools and booksellers to be cautious when dealing with copyrighted materials.
Any school found selling pirated books will face consequences. “We’ll treat them as book pirates,” Amudipe said.
The commission requires all book dealers to document their sources to ensure they’re selling legitimate books.
The operation targeted five bookshops and three warehouses, including Chuks, Edu, and Don Mekus, all in the Yaba area of Lagos State.
The NCC aims to protect Nigeria’s creative industry and promote a culture of respect for intellectual property.
By cracking down on piracy, the commission hopes to encourage authors and publishers to continue creating and investing in quality content.
