CAREER OF BONNIE BARTLETT

Bartlett studied acting with Lee Strasberg and began playing the heroine “Vanessa Dale Raven” on the soap opera Love of Life from 1955 to 1959 for actress Peggy McCay on television. She also had a previous role on the program in which she briefly played the character of Ellie Crown, a role that Hildy Parks played for several years. Then, in the 1960s, she moved on to tonight roles.

Her most popular role was on St. Elsewhere as Ellen Craig. She took on greater prominence in the 1984–85 season when the storyline included Ellen and Mark’s marital problems. The following season, the storyline deepened when their son was killed and their granddaughter had to be raised. Bartlett won back-to-back Emmys and became a contract actor. Ellen and Mark’s divorce and slow reconciliation after losing their granddaughter in a custody dispute with her birth mother included other difficult elements.

Bartlett only accepted small guest appearances on programs such as The Golden Girls, Gunsmoke, The Rockford Files and The Waltons for many years, as well as a recurring role as Grace Snider Edwards on Prairie Little House. 1974 to 1977. In the 1980s, her acting career picked up significantly, including the miniseries V and North and South: Book II.

Bartlett and her husband, William Daniels, made Emmy history in 1986 by becoming the second true married couple to win the awards on the same night. The feat was first performed by Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in 1965. Bartlett and Daniels won the television series St. Elsewhere for their portrayals of Dr. Mark and Mrs. Ellen Craig. They later acted together again in a season of the ABC series Daniels Boy Meets World when she played a college dean who employed her husband’s character, and their characters later married.

When St. Elsewhere ended in 1988, Bartlett’s career shifted to a wide range of guest appearances, including major roles in Wiseguy as the tough and corrupt sewage industry matriarch; as Andrea Drey, Secretary General of the United Nations Earth Ocean Organization (WEU) on SeaQuest DSV; on home improvement as Lucille Taylor’s mother; and in the ER as the mother of Ruth Katherine Greek Taylor; Bartlett’s last feature film role to date was in the movie Valediction.
