BIOGRAPHY OF BOB SEGER

Bob Seger, born Robert Clark Seger, is an American singer, songwriter, producer, bandleader, guitarist, and pianist. He was born on May 6, 1945, to Charlotte and Stewart Seger at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.

BOB SEGER AGE

Bob was born on May 6, 1945. He is currently 73 years old as of 2018.

BOB SEGER FAMILY ET EARLY LIFE

At age five, he moved with his family to Ann Arbor. Seger was exposed to music from an early age as his father played multiple instruments. In 1956, when Seger was 10, his father abandoned the family and moved to California. The remaining family quickly lost their comfortable middle-class status and struggled financially.

EDUCATION BOB SEGER

He attended Tappan Junior High School, now Tappan Middle School in Ann Arbor, Michigan and graduated from Pioneer High School and then Ann Arbor High School in 1963. Seger also attended Lincoln Park High School for a year. During his high school years, he ran track and field.

BOB SEGER WIFE

Seger’s first marriage in 1968 lasted “one day to less than a year”. He had a long term relationship with Jan Dinsdale from 1972 to 1983. In 1987 he married actress Annette Sinclair and they divorced a year later. He married Juanita Dorricott in 1993, in a small private setting at the Village Club, Bloomfield Hills; they have two children.

BOB SEGER’S CAREER

Seger’s songs tell stories about characters that listeners can easily identify with. It’s often about people trying to navigate their way through a world that has proven to be more complex and difficult than they could have imagined.

This road is one that Seger traveled himself, although he fortunately always proved he was capable of finding his way back. One of Michigan’s finest, he grew up outside the media spotlight and steeped himself in the rock & roll and soul sounds that Detroit remains famous for. Drawing on these sources, he defined a musical voice for the American heart.

Seger paid his dues for many years trying to break out of the regional scene. He scored a national hit in 1968 with “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man,” his Capitol Records debut. But it would be eight long years and nine more albums before he returned to the charts.

During those years he toured tirelessly, over 200 dates a year, and released a string of albums that die-hard fans celebrated but failed to crack the national charts. With money running out and diminishing returns to the studio’s efforts, friends and foes alike wondered if he would ever make it.

In a last ditch effort, Seger put together a group of songs that became his eighth album, Beautiful Loser. The album sold 80,000 copies in Michigan, boosting his confidence. But it was the follow-up Live Bullet album Beautiful Loser that finally garnered significant national attention from Seger, a double-vinyl record set that was recorded live in Detroit in 1975 with the Silver Bullet Band.

Whatever recognition Seger has garnered so far has been based on two elements: the emotional power of his songs and the intensity of his performances. Mesmerizing performances of ‘Travelin’ Man/Beautiful Loser’, ‘Heavy Music’, ‘Katmandu’, ‘Rambolin’ Gamblin’ Man’ and ‘Turn the Page’ combined these two elements on Live Bullet. The album broke and set the stage for Seger’s meteoric rise with Night Moves.

Night Moves ranks with American Graffiti, the film that inspired it, in its depiction of the bittersweet transition from adolescence to adulthood. Originally released in 1976, Night Moves was recorded in Detroit with the Silver Bullet Band and in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the incomparable Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

The album went on to garner overwhelming praise from critics, along with the hit singles ‘Night Moves’, ‘Mainstreet’ and ‘Rock and Roll Never Forgets’. It’s one of the seminal records of the 70s, and the fact that ‘Night Moves’ continues to be a radio staple is a testament to how strongly listeners of all ages felt their lives represented on it.

But Seger was just getting started. The eight studio albums he has recorded since then have generated a catalog of songs that have entered the pantheon of contemporary popular music: ‘Hollywood Nights’, ‘Still the Same’, ‘Old Time Rock and Roll’, ‘We Got Tonight,” “You Will Walk With Me,” “Against the Wind,” “His Leg,” “Roll Me Up,” “Like a Rock,” “The Fire Within,” and more.

BOB SEGER QUOTES

  1. Left alone on top of a mountain, watching the Great Divide. I could go east, I could go west, it was up to me. Just then I saw a young falcon flying and my soul began to rise.
  2. The years passed slowly and I found myself alone. Surrounded by strangers whom I thought were my friends, I found myself further and further from home.
  3. When you have kids, you start thinking about their future and forget about yours.
  4. Here I am, on the road again. I’m here, on stage. Here I am, playing the star again. There I go, turn the page.
  5. Mediocrity is easy, good things take time, great need for commitment.
  6. Call me a relic, call me whatever, say I’m old-fashioned, say I’m over the hill. Today’s music doesn’t have the same soul, I like that old rock and roll.
  7. I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.
  8. Deep in my soul, I’ve been so alone, all my hopes are fading. I yearned for love like everyone else, I know I will keep looking after today.
  9. I never say never, because I don’t want to be one of those guys.
  10. I was a runner, a failed quarterback, a third-string quarterback, but on the trail I was a 2-mile.
