BOB HUGGINS CAREER

His passion for the game led Huggins to coaching where he started as a graduate assistant in West Virginia under Gardner in 1977. He then spent two years as an assistant to Eldon Miller at Ohio State University. Bob started his chef career at a young age, 27 years old.

He accepted the head coaching job at Walsh University in 1980. Huggins was able to compile a 71-26 record in three seasons at Walsh. He was able to win twice earning NAIA District 22 Coach of the Year honors. In the 1982-83 season, Bob led Walsh’s team to a perfect 30-0 regular season mark and an eventual mark of 34-1.

After serving as an assistant at the University of Central Florida for the 1983–84 season, Huggins was named head coach at the University of Akron. At the University of Akron, Bob compiled a 97-46 record and reached postseason play in three of his five seasons. His victories included a bid for the NCAA during the 1985–86 season.

The University of Cincinnati had a prior history but unfortunately fell on hard times. The once-proud program that had been to 5 consecutive Final Fours from 1959 to 1963 — including a pair of national championships in 1961 and 1962 — hadn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 1977 when Huggins arrived in 1989 and hadn’t made only an NIT appearance at the time. They had also had only one winning conference record in the previous 12 years.

After being relegated to the NIT his first two years, Huggins will take the Bearcats to the Final Four in his third season – the first of 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Huggins compiled a 399-127 (.759) record in 16 years at Cincinnati, making him the winningest coach by wins and percentage in school basketball history. His creative tactics led the University of Cincinnati to ten regular season conference titles. Huggins also led the team to eight league tournament titles.

The Bear-cats have appeared in postseason play in each of Huggins’ 16 seasons. Besides their aforementioned Final Four appearance in 1992, they qualified for the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament two other times, in 1993 and 1996.

BOB HUGGINS DUI

Bob Huggins’ fate was sealed as soon as Nancy Zimpher saw the black-and-white footage of her drunken basketball coach tripping during a field sobriety test. Soon after, the University of Cincinnati’s most successful basketball coach found out the hard way that UC’s new president – and its first female boss – had bigger balls than he did.

Huggins’ arrest for DUI on June 8, 2004 – and the release of the cruiser cam video three days later – marked the beginning of the end of a remarkable chapter in UC sports history. and Cincinnati. Huggins appeared genuinely contrite and even shed tears at a press conference after the video was released. It was a far cry from typical Huggins behavior on the pitch – yelling at his players, swearing at the refs.

In the past, Bob complained after his CCTV camera captured someone urinating on the side walls of his house. He tweeted saying that despite having a door it was still of no use as the man in the photo walked in and broke free there.

BOB HUGGINS HEART ATTACK

West Virginia’s Bob Huggins fell to his knees in pain late in the first half against Texas on Monday night. The 63-year-old coach grabbed his chest and took a minute to regain his composure surrounded by his team. Huggins finally got up and finished the game, presiding over a 77-62 win for the Mountaineers.

Now we know the problem: Huggins’ defibrillator has tripped. The coach said he felt dizzy and decided to end the game after ‘talking to a few people’ at half-time.

Huggins said it was the second time his defibrillator worked. He suffered a heart attack in 2002. We’ll update this story as it develops.
