Bo Ryan is a former American college basketball coach and player. He was the head coach of the University of Wisconsin–Madison Badgers men’s basketball team from 2001 to December 2015. He was also the head coach of men’s basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville from 1984 to 1999 and at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. from 1999 to 2001. He retired on December 15, 2015.

He started playing basketball when he was still young. His father, Butch Ryan, coached youth sports, including basketball, for underprivileged children in Chester, Pennsylvania. His father taught him the skills needed to succeed as a playmaker, usually the position of team leader on the pitch. He became a star basketball player, leading his high school team to a 25-1 record in his senior year.

He was also a high school quarterback. After high school, he worked as a point guard at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. His love for sports drove him to stay involved in sports, choosing to pursue the coaching profession.

His coaching career began in 1972 at Brook Haven High School in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a history teacher and head basketball coach. After graduating from Wilkes University, he began his graduate studies at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. In 1973, he began his college coaching career at Racine Dominican College in Racine, Wisconsin. He won the coach of the year award as head baseball coach at Dominican.

In 1974, after Dominican College closed, he became head coach at Sun Valley High School in Aston, Pennsylvania, while he was named conference coach of the year in 1976. His success at Dominic College and at Sun Valley landed him an assistant head coaching position at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under head coaches Bill Cofield and Steve Yoder from 1976 to 1984.

After accepting the head coaching position at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, UW-Platteville was the winningest NCAA men’s basketball team of the 1990s (all divisions) with a record of 266 -26 (.908). On January 27, 2007, UW-Platteville officially honored its 15-year tenure by naming the Williams Field House playing surface “Bo Ryan Court.” Ryan, with the 2007 Wisconsin Badgers team, attended the event.

Robin Van Ert, the woman who had an extramarital affair with former Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan, is now suing school officials at the University of Wisconsin, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.

Van Ert filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Madison for alleged defamation and other rights violations, including his right to privacy for revealing his identity.

Van Ert initially reported to the school that an affair, believed to have started in 2009, was taking place in February 2015. Months later, Ryan announced he would be retiring as head coach after the season. 2015-16; however, in December of that year he abruptly withdrew and later said the decision had nothing to do with the case.

The University of Wisconsin conducted an investigation which determined that Ryan had not abused university resources and closed the investigation.
“As a direct and immediate result of the defendants’ actions, Van Ert suffered severe emotional and physical suffering, loss of privacy, damage to his reputation, loss of business, and incurred substantial damages and legal costs.” , says the complaint.

In the complaint, it is said that the initial investigation was ultimately a “sham” and was not conducted broadly enough, also claiming that Ryan was “unfit” to mentor student-athletes, thus violating his contract with the school in his character clause.

She seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorneys’ fees.

Among those included in the lawsuit are Chancellor Rebecca Blank, athletic director Barry Alvarez and university spokesman John Lucas.
