Early Life
Blake Tollison Shelton was born in Ada, Oklahoma, to Richard Lee “Dick” Shelton (1940–2012), a car salesman, and Dorothy Ann (née Bristol), a salon owner who was born in 1936.
Shelton started singing at a young age, and by the time he was 12 years old, his uncle had started teaching him how to play the guitar. He wrote his first song when he was 15 years old.
Blake Shelton was given a Denbo Diamond Award in his home state at the age of 16. His older brother Richie Shelton was murdered in a car accident on November 13, 1990, at 24.
At the age of 17, he received his high school diploma and relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to start a singing career. There he found employment at a song publishing business, and Bobby Braddock helped him in 1997 to land a production deal with Sony Music.
Career
Blake Shelton signed with Giant Records in Nashville a few years later. He planned to make “I Wanna Talk About Me” available as a single in 2001. Toby Keith finally recorded the song, and his version of it became a number-one smash. However, label personnel thought the song was inadequate for a lead-off single.
Instead, Shelton’s first single, “Austin,” was made available by Giant. Giant Records folded soon after the debut of that song, and Blake Shelton was moved to the parent label Warner Bros. Records.
“Austin” lasted five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts, becoming Shelton’s first number-one single. Bobby Braddock, a songwriter, produced Shelton’s self-titled debut album, which Warner published.
Additionally, it gave birth to the Top 20 songs “All Over Me,” which Shelton co-wrote with Mike Pyle and Earl Thomas Conley, and “Ol’ Red.” Blake Shelton believes “Ol’ Red” to be his hallmark song, and despite it not being a big radio hit, it has gained popularity in live performances.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded the album platinum status for sales of one million copies. Maria Konicki Dinoia of Allmusic gave the album a favorable review, praising Shelton for adding songs written by Braddock and Conley and describing “Austin” as “tremendously inventive.”
Scott Homewood’s review of Country Standard Time was less complimentary, noting that it “simply reeks of being constructed with the goal to capture the expanding alternative country market.”
The Dreamer, Blake Shelton’s second album, was initially made available on Warner Bros. Records on February 4, 2003. “The Baby,” the album’s lead-off single, debuted at No. 1 on the country charts and remained there for three weeks.
Heavy Liftin’ and “Playboys of the Southwestern World,” the second and third singles, respectively only peaked at Nos. 32 and 24, although The Dreamer also received a gold certification.
On Tracy Byrd’s mid-2003 single “The Truth About Men,” he recorded guest vocals alongside Andy Griggs and Montgomery Gentry. Shelton’s third studio album, titled Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill, was released in 2004.
The album’s lead song, “When Somebody Knows You That Well,” a co-write by Harley Allen that reached No. 37 on the country charts, was followed by “Some Beach,” which became his third No. 1 success and remained there for four weeks. A cover of Conway Twitty’s 1988 song “Goodbye Time” came next.
This cover and the song that came after it, “Nobody but Me,” both made the Top Ten for Shelton. Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill was given the same platinum certification as his debut album. Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill: A Video Collection, a video compilation, was released along with the album.
