He is the son of Marilyn Ann Scales and Frank Eugene Underwood. He attended Petersburg High School in Petersburg, Virginia and then went to Carnegie Mellon School of Drama located in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

After his film debut Krush Groove, Underwood’s 1985 appearance on The Cosby Show landed him a brief stint on the ABC drama One Life to Live as Bobby Blue, which ultimately prompted his presentation on the arrangement. televised LA Law, where he introduced himself. from 1987 to 1994.
