BITSIE TULLOCH INTERVIEW
‘Interview on TNWU’
Do you think becoming pregnant with Nick’s child helped Juliette go in the direction she went?
She was already kind of heading in a dark direction anyway. But no, I think ultimately Juliet was like, ‘That should have been my baby.’ And also, it raises a lot of moral questions, that Nick didn’t know he was sleeping with Adalind when she got pregnant. He was thinking of sleeping with Juliette.
So that’s a question I’ve seen a lot of fans raise on Twitter and Facebook. Like, does he have to take care of this baby? He did not know. But, I think you know that the new character, Eve, has no emotional attachment to the baby or to Adalind. But did Juliet at that time send her even further down? Yes. I’m sure yes.
But she was on that path anyway.
Your character started out sweet and kind, and now you’re dark. How do you like the way your character grows, changes, and becomes more powerful?
Well, if you’re really following from season 1 to season 5, I feel really blessed because how often do you really play multiple characters on the same TV show.
And it’s kind of that I look at this Eve obviously for me, it’s really the third because there was like a good, sweet Juliette. Then there was Juliet, the darkest of hexagons. And now you are experiencing a kind of rebirth. And we have an entirely new character. It has always existed. And I was really grateful to the writers because you know I get to – I get to – you know there’s something to be said for knowing a character so well.
But it’s also fun to play and experiment with. So, I was really excited about the hexen beast story just because Juliette had been so consistently good and caring and helpful for so long.
That I thought if anyone was going to turn around and be so bad, so evil and so powerful, it would have to be her. So that was really exciting for me. And then I’ll definitely admit that I had a little bit of mixed feelings when they — the producers called me in March and then said, ‘It’s our idea to go to season 5’ because he It was hard to say goodbye to Juliette.
You know by then I had played it in various iterations, good or bad, for four years. So I knew I was going to miss her. And I knew it was going to be hard to say goodbye to him. But I’m having a blast with this new character Eve. It’s really fun. I have to do a lot of research, you know. They said you have to watch Lupus on Nikita for inspiration.
And then, like you now, I was shooting season 5, obviously in private because no one was allowed to talk about it. And my name was even changed on the cast sheet and everything in the queue so no background actor would even know it was me. They were great about – about – you know there were a lot of layers to keep the secret.
But some directors were coming in season 5 and they were like, ‘Oh my God, you have to watch this.’ David Strathairn came over and said, “You have to watch Hanna” with Kate Blanchett and Eric Bana. And look at his performance. I’m not even going to try to pronounce his name. She’s such an amazing actress.
She is currently in Brooklyn and has been nominated for an Oscar. You will know who I am talking about.
But – so I was watching this. And then I was also kind of inspired by Alicia Vikander’s performance in Ex Machina. So it’s just – it’s really fun, the new character.
The new you, yes. So was there a physical or mental challenge to get into this character?
Certainly because for me personally, like I said, it was hard to sort out – it was hard to let go of Juliette because everyone always plays the same character. So I work with actors that you know I’m used to being in this world with them and telling them about this other character in a certain way. And I had to brush it all aside.
Physically, there was an awful lot of not only I spent a lot of – I was actually only for four episodes. But I started training a lot more than before, just to get really strong and eat a lot of protein. But to really sell that it’s a new character, I had to do something physical. It couldn’t just be – you know the dialogue is different, or she’s dressed different, or she’s wearing wigs.
All of this is true…
But I had to – you know, that’s why certain performances like the Ex Machina performance, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to take – I’m going to steal some of this – his robotic movements’ because it is – the new character Eve is basically, I don’t mean brainwashed because she hasn’t been brainwashed.
But she was almost broken. Hadrian’s Wall knew how powerful she was and kidnapped her. You know the trouble – you shot her with what we now know were tranquilizer darts and basically shattered her and turned her into a fighting machine. Keeping that in mind, it’s something the new character appreciates.
And then psychologically so that she really, really feels like I’m a new person and Juliette is dead and “I’m not Juliette”. You’re talking about someone, not me, it was really about completely disconnecting from his old life and not even letting a flicker of emotion or anything like that, anything from his old life trigger it.
Does Eve have residual feelings from her past life? Will we find out that she still cares about Nick? Will there be something in there?
Right now, his main goal – his main goal is to get the job done. And you know there’s an episode coming up where she kind of has a heart-to-heart with Nick. I believe it’s in the previews, so I don’t think I’m leaving. But she says that was the only reason she had to live. Because she was so powerful and so out of control and she basically didn’t know how to reign over these most hex powers.
And Hadrian’s Wall gave him an outlet and taught him how to do it. But she – she’s so scared that you’ll even know how to digress or fall back into the mean Juliet, which she is – just couldn’t be more focused on being controlled and really getting this job done. And obviously, Hadrian’s Wall is a powerful, positive group that’s basically formed in response to the fight against Black Claw, which is like the big uprising that’s starting to happen.
But did I answer your question? I don’t know if I did?
I can understand that you know as an actress the excitement of playing Juliet in The Wicked Juliet. I can understand the challenge and excitement of playing Eve. But what do you think of the fan reaction over the past year, where people have gone from rooting for the character to rooting against your character?
Where you had people you know looking to see Nick end up with someone else. I mean she was really you know she was mean. And not like some kind of cool evil. But she was pretty naughty at the end there.
To be honest with you, in a way the character was also a bit polarizing. So with the exception of season 2 and season 3 when it was – which is to be expected because you know people – people are fans of the show. And they want Nick and the protagonist to win. And season 1, I’m a necessity because it had to be kept in the dark, Juliette was a bit of a passive character.
And I think some people are upset about that. And then season 2 and season 3, everyone loved him. It was the Scooby gang and it was divine and everyone was involved in helping. But, to keep a show alive and to keep the fans engaged, you have to really shake things up and maybe piss people off.
And I just kind of understood that in the future, there almost had to be a bigger antagonist than there had been until now. And what better antagonist do you have than the women who are the love of his life who he trusts knowing you implicitly that they are now basically out for blood involved in his mother’s death and so on.
So I certainly didn’t expect anyone to be happy about it. And they weren’t. And you kind of know that – you know I was really happy to see that people were really, you know, in the four episodes that I wasn’t in, people really missed Juliette. And they were like, “Yeah. I was so angry. But I miss her. And it doesn’t look like the same show without her. ‘
And again, like Juliette won’t be coming back anytime soon. You know, I think it remains to be seen as well to further answer the previous question whether or not she starts to develop a feeling for Nick. It’s TV. She had loved him for a long time. Right now, as I said, she’s more focused on work. But, I’ve seen nothing but overwhelmingly positive and excited fan reactions to me still being a part of the show and excited to see what the new character looks like.
So, I know it was a bummer for everyone that we had such a long break between the Fall Finals and our return on Friday. But I think it will be worth it. And yeah, she’s just a fun character and see how over the next 5-6 episodes she’ll gradually meet her old friends.
And everyone reacts differently to this new character of Eve.
After finding out about Juliette’s fate, did you know you’d be back so soon?
Yes. In fact, it was supposed to be even shorter. Initially, you knew there had to be this dream sequence with – in the first episode, when Nick dreams of the funeral. But then he realized it was a dream. So it’s like these big questions. Where is the body? Where is the body? And I know one of the producers wanted me to come back to episode 3.
But I think it was finally decided and – that if they really wanted to sell this and really have fun with it, really convince the fans that Juliette – you know Juliette was off the show and I wouldn’t be coming back. They wanted to extend it a bit longer. Not very long. So I came back in 6 and filmed some scenes from episode 1.
So it was basically 2-5 that I was away. But, actually, it was – it was never supposed to be longer than episode 6. In fact, it was going to be shorter. I felt like, I will also say, it was a lot longer for me because – and I think for the cast because we all had a hard time not talking about it.
I was – it was decided that I wasn’t going to Comic Con this year, which disappointed me because I love Comic Con. I love the panel. I love seeing all the fans. But also, it would have been too obvious, I think I could go back to the show if I had gone to Comic Con. So that’s the situation where it’s like I have to take one for the team and stay in Portland.
But yes, really not talk about it. And there was – there were a lot of fun and clever things that we had to do, including me filming almost exclusively on the stages so that I could be hidden in case someone took pictures of me in Portland. So it was a lot of work on stage.
I was wondering if you could talk a bit more about these challenges of keeping Eve a secret. I mean you’re quite active on Twitter and interacting with fans and such. So what were some of the challenges in keeping this from the fans?
Well, I mean my biggest challenge – you know I mean honestly, that’s me – the season 4 finale was in May. So that was almost – almost 7 months of having also – you and me – probably of any cast member, I’m the most active on social media. I love interacting with fans on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
So that was – I felt like what I would say very clearly is that Juliette is dead because she is. But I never said, ‘I’m not going back to Grimm’ because I didn’t want to outright lie. I would say, “I know. It’s really disappointing, but yeah, Juliet’s – you know Juliet won’t come back” knowing what was going on.
I also always love tweeting behind-the-scenes pics while I’m on set of cool stuff happening. So it’s been about 7 months from you know when I posted a photo, I’d say I was visiting someone on set. Like, ‘Oh, visit David.’ And one of the things that saved us in great respect is the fact that I’m also dating David Giuntoli in real life. So a lot of people just assumed that when they saw me in Portland or knew I was still in Portland, they just assumed I was still there because I was dating David, not because I was filming .
Like I said earlier, on the scripts, typically, it looks like Juliet – Bitsie Tulloch in third place. And when this new character came along, we basically had to come up with an alias that was my legal first and middle name, Elizabeth Andrea. And then they had – they pushed me to like position 10 or somebody so nobody would guess it was me in case somebody got their hands on the script.
Or you know someone recycled the script and someone saw it. And also so that background actors or guest stars wouldn’t know I was still on the show. They were really tight-lipped about it. My plaster chair was taken away with my name on it. My – I have a sign on the trailer door saying to close the door behind you because Henry, my dog, is always going to work with me and I don’t want him out.
It was like Bitsie and Henry’s love. And it faded away. I mean there was no sign of my name anywhere. So everyone took it seriously. I know the crew sat down at the start of the season because it’s serious. We don’t want the secret to come out. We need to know you. There was a lot of confusion with the early directors.
Aaron Lipstadt especially because he would call me Elizabeth, Juliet, Eve, Bitsie. Like it would basically go through a variety of names before being like, “I don’t know. Come here. “So yeah, it was – it was tough. The hardest thing for me was not interacting so much with the fans.
Now, as you mentioned, you basically played three different characters on the show. So, do you have a favorite quality of each of them?
That’s an excellent question. I would say that Eve is so focused on the laser and nothing can get her out of her mission which you say is to basically take out Black Claw. That’s what she is – that’s why in her head she’s like that, that’s the only reason I’m alive right now and why I’m not wreaking havoc and destruction on the people I love.
I have – I will concentrate everything. So she’s incredibly focused. It’s definitely a little harder to pick one quality I really liked about the mean Juliet, other than I guess I kind of respect how maniacal and open she was about it. And just kind of towards the end, when you see this evolution, because in the very beginning she was really fighting against it.
She didn’t want it. And then towards the end, it’s like ‘Well, I can’t control it. Then I might as well adopt him. And it was almost like flying your monster flag. And it was what it was. And she was like, ‘This is who I am now. I did my best to get rid of it. I do not know how. Do. This is who I am. And I will embrace the new me. ‘
And then with Juliette, I – I would say she was – I always loved her very much because she was so – so well-meaning and so caring and really so in love with Nick. And you know, had really sacrificed a lot for him. Obviously many sacrifices choosing to stay with him and live with him and you basically know to be a constant danger.
You mentioned earlier how Eve was kind of broken and how she wasn’t quite brainwashed but more broken? I know in this week’s episode they show a bit of that. But to what extent are they going to participate in this? Like what happened to Juliette to get her to Eve?
They don’t – yeah, they don’t really interfere. You will see excerpts from his training. It’s really cool – I mean it’s like in episode 8 or 9, there’s a cool scene. Just like, she’s so powerful physically. But she doesn’t even train like normal people. So you will see part of it. But they don’t go too far.
And I don’t know. It could be a shot on the road where they’re going to do flashbacks. But a lot of things are really more evaded and sort of discussed, but not thoroughly explored per se.
You talked earlier about how you worked with this cast for so long. And it’s hard to let go of those relationships. Is it hard to stay in that robotic state, not reacting differently than you would as Juliet in certain scenes?
It’s a good question. I didn’t – I pretty much interacted and I’m not going to say who. I interacted – or Eve interacted with almost everyone. And everyone had different reactions to him. It’s – I guess honestly the answer is when I’m in character, it’s not that hard because, like I said earlier, she’s so focused. And it’s almost like you know with Nick, there’s just one – maybe just the smallest tug.
But she won’t even go there. She’s not even going to let her mind go there or her heart go there because she – you know she’s like, “I’m a new person. Juliet is dead. And I’m really just here to do this job. End of the story.’ So as an actor, it’s always – you know it’s really fun. You know we’re always kidding.
And the cast is really close, so it’s always kinda funny when you go from like sitting in the green room and everyone is messing around all of a sudden, I’m sort of a line, ‘Nobody’s telling me speak. I need to be focused. And I’m going to – you know, I’m going to step away a bit before I start a scene so I – I’ll let you know and remind myself, “I’m not in this gang anymore. I am a new person. »
And I just need you to know how to do the job.
You were talking earlier about the clever tricks you did to not let it be known that you were still on set, including not coming to Comic Con. What I found interesting was that your biography was actually removed from the NBC news website which sold it for me.
And me –
Yes.
You lobbied in November for the 100th episode celebration. So how hard was it to keep this a secret from everyone you interviewed?
By November, because we were only a few weeks away from my episode returning, I was starting to not lose my lips. But sometimes I’ve been – you know the most I’d say you know to hint at a possible comeback is a few times in interviews, I’ve been like, ‘You know what? It’s science fiction. Nothing could happen. »
So at that time, I was sort of answering questions like that. But in – honestly, in November, because I had to answer questions and do interviews on the show since May giving anything, in November, it really wasn’t difficult. I just felt like I was doing another interview on the show.
And it was really about the gratitude I had for being a member of the case for 4 years as Juliet. Again, it was little things that I said without really revealing anything or lying. Obviously, I was excited to play Juliet for four years. And I was there to support all of my fellow cast members.
The only thing that hasn’t been revealed is that I’m also a current and have remained an actor the whole time.
How did the producers tell you in March that your character was dying but not dying? Is it to die and be resurrected?
There’s kind of a funny story because me in particular, I’m close to a lot of the team members. And at various times over the last four years, I’d like to call the producers and say, “Well, where are we going with this script?” And they’re like, ‘How do you know that?’ And I was like, ‘Well, I’m not saying who, but somebody told me.’
So, I had like – I had some crew members who would just like to tell me because they’ll see a preview of an episode before the cast sees the script. So what ended up happening was the producers released the plan to the crew and you know the production crew in Portland this afternoon. The conversation took place in March.
They release a preview and they had to call me because they knew the second the crew took possession of this plan that they were going to tell me, call me and be like Juliet will die. Will you really die? Are you out of the show? And they didn’t want me to think at any time that I was really dead.
So they called me and they said, “Just so you know, we know your friends are with everyone. And so they’re probably going to tell you that you’re going to be called. But today we publish a preview of Juliette’s death. But don’t worry, you know you’re not off the show. Our idea is that you will be reborn as – and somehow reworked into a Nikita-like character. ‘
This is – this is what – how this conversation went. And then it was good. And I was just curious to read about the new character at the time and what she was going to look like.
