Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American author and journalist best known for his writing on the subject of racism and social injustice. He is also often labeled as the most influential black intellectual of the generation. His revolutionary book ‘ Between the world and me ‘ published in 2015 sold 1.5 million copies worldwide and has eventually been translated into 19 languages. He also won a National Nonfiction Book Award for that book and was also nominated for the 2016 Phi Beta Kapp Book Awards . In all, he has written three books The Beautiful Struggle Between Me and the World and We Were Eight Years in Power. As of 2018, he works as a national correspondent for The Atlantic Magazine.and previously he had also been involved with various magazines and publications such as the Washington City Newspaper, the Village Voice, and the NewYork Times Magazine. Raised as a comic book fan, Ta Nehisi Coates is now also a writer for Black Panther for Marvel Comics. The first installment released in 2016 of Black Panther sold 253,259 issues, making it the best-selling comic of 2016.

Education and early life of Ta-Nehisi Coates

Coates is an American national and was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 30, 1975, to mother Cheryl Lynn and father William Coates who was a former Black Panther member, Vietnam veteran, and founder of Black Classic Press. Coates’ early influence in writing came from his mother, who often made him write essays about his bad behavior and also due to his father’s job at Black Classic Press. which specialized in publishing African-American titles.

Coates attended several schools near the Baltimore area, including Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and began writing poetry from the early age of 17. He graduated from Woodlawn High School and in 1993 enrolled at Harvard University, but was left without a degree.

Early in his writing career, Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote periodicals for various magazines including Washington Monthly , Philadelphia Weekly , The People’s Voice , Entertainment Weekly , The Time, and Oprah Magazine . His career got a huge boost when he started blogging for the Atlantic magazine website. At the time, his topic on pop culture trends earned him a following. His famous writings for Atlantic Magazine include ‘Obama and the Myth of the Black Messiah’ (2008), ‘Fear the Black President’ (2013) and ‘ The Case for Reparations’‘(2014). Fear of Black President and The Case of Reparations won National Magazine Award in 2013 and 2014.

Coates released his first book in 2008 titled ‘The Beautiful Struggle: One Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Path to Manhood’ . Her first book was not commercially successful, although it earned positive reviews from critics. Her second book, ‘Between World and Me’, became a bestseller and also won the Kirkus Award and the National Award for Nonfiction. The book is based on the controversial subject of American society and how it is structured for white supremacy. Her third book, a collection of essays, ‘ We Were Eight Years in Power ‘ explores the issue of Barack Obama’s presidency following the election of Donald Trump.

In addition to his nonfiction work, Coates has also written comic book series based on the Marvel superhero. ‘Black Panther’.
