Song ll-Gook was born on October 1, 1971 in Seoul, South Korea. He is the son of congresswoman and actress Kim Eul-dong and also the great-grandson of Kim Jwa-Jin, the grandson of Kim Du-Han. Jwa-Jin and Du-Han were the famous generals of the Korean independence movement and anarchists in the early 20th century. He follows the religion of Roman Catholicism and has Korean nationality.

Song ll-Gook went to Cheongju University and majored in Performing Arts.
