She was born the youngest of four children to an artist father. Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr. , who also had an oil business and mother Mary Lee Rafferty was the president of the Convent School of the Sacred Heart, under the Department of English. Her parents raised her with her siblings, three sisters Connie Rafferty , Maura Rafferty and Ann Rafferty in a Catholic family. Her older sister, Maura, is also a very good painter and one of her sisters, Ann, is a TV movie writer and director.
As a child, she was very drawn to acting and used to do caricatures among her family members. Growing up, she also began taking private acting and dance classes. After joining her first school, Phillips Academy located in Massachusetts, she could really express herself in front of a large crowd. She was active in her school drama team and performed many plays during her school time. A good student, she graduated there in 1989 and enjoyed a successful life.
Rafferty enrolled at Hamilton College, where she majored in theater and English. She also studied her third year at Oxford University and after graduating in 1993 from Hamilton College.
